I'm looking at buying a litre bike (not a superbike, just has a large but lazy engine) and am wondering what are the negatives about spending around £1000 on insurance and only TPO? Has anyone done this? I'm assuming if it is damaged in any way or stolen etc I have nothing to get the bike replaced/repaired?

Also is it possible for someone to insure two seperate bikes on two seperate policies? I ask this as I could pay for my Dad to be insured on it then adding me as a named rider, although whether they will allow that for someone under 21 I do not know. However he also has his own bike.

If anyone who works in or knows someone who works in the motorcycle insurance industry could help it would be appreciated.

Thanks. Thumbs Up

This is very common practise with car insurance; the Saxo 1.6 with full tints, big bore exhaust and £3k sound system owned by Mrs Jenkins a respectfull school teacher who also owns a Range Rover - she has her son insured on the car in case he ever needs to go and pick up the groceries. Ahem.

For it to work like you mention they would have to insure for under 21s and your dads name would probably have to be on the V5. I imagine you should be able to get a cheaper price IF they are willing to insure you.

Having over £1000 insurance at only tpo makes you very very wary of leaving it anywhere without it locked to something where you can see it as for dropping it at 19 loosing my ncb would be worth more than the repairs in most cases, if your samart with only tpo insurance you will lock it up all the time your not on it and invest in an alarm and a nice big chain !!!!!

I worry my arse off when my old man asks to take my bike out, he's only TPO so if he totals it I've lost it altogether

Well of course he would, but I still wouldn't fancy a phonecall saying "Sorry Rob, your ZXR's wrapped round a tree".

You will sometimes find that TPF&T is cheaper or the same price as TPO.

Strange but true.

Either way, a crash that is your fault, you will have to pay for the damage done to your bike (the damage to anyone elses property is covered though).

You can insure as many different bikes on different policies as you like. You can also insure two or more bikes on the same policy. It is insuring the same bike on two different policies they get tetchy about

I insured my dad on my bike and he has never ridden it.

He is like 45 though had his licence about 3 years ( Police BAB alert Police ) so it cost me no extra.

Oh and he has never ridden my bike either and I have had it since december!

I found that as well. I think it's because fewer places provide TPO insurance, so a broker has a more limited choice of companies to choose from.

Ok thanks for the help. Not sure if the bike im after can be restricted (or at least have them fitted for a short time), so may have to stick to the GPZ500s.

And my Dad doesnt want his no claims (years of them) touched or the hassle with speeding tickets. And he's insurance covers him to ride any bike anyway, bugger! Laughing

Looks like I can either stump up the cash or wait a while longer. Thanks for the help though. Thumbs Up

I pay £1,300 TPO at 17 for a 600. Style comes at a price. Cool

If you search around companies enough you will almost deff get a decent price.

Thumbs Up

I've never known a bike that can't be restricted. When in the mob (read mod) a mate of mine had his Hyabusa (spelling?) restricted for two months.

I'll probably have my R1 restricted (yeah right) for a month or two when I get it. Insurance for that is just over £900, I'm 19 with one year NCB, two coming up next month. Good thing about TPO, is unless you smack into someone else, you'll never have a claim! Wink

Dude, I pay £300 a year at 19 for a brand new Daytona 600. Tried motorcycle direct? Two years can't make a grand's difference.

I'm 20 this month with 0NCB and one claim pending. Wasnt my fault but no idea what it will be settled as.

I'm looking to buy a Buell XB9S. I am unsure whether there is a restriction kit for this bike.

The bit im worried about (assuming I can get insured) is that my area isnt the best in the world and it will need to be held down firmly. That concerns me a little, although it will be in a garage and I will install a ground anchor and alarm and datatag it. The only other time it will be left unnatended will be at my place of work which is on a fairly quiet industrial estate, where it will also be chained up to a wall mounted post.

@Chriss im assuming the R1 will be on TPO insurance? The bad thing about it is should it get stolen your left out of pocket and without any bike!

No offence markcatate but as I understand it your bike/insurance is paid for by your parents(not saying this is bad) but it is different when it's your own money. This will mean having not much of a life outside of this bike for the next 8 months. So is that price worth it, that's the question I have to answer. Then again im not a going out at night person, I prefer to just ride so for me it makes sense.....

That's very true mate, but the £400 I save on insurance I make my own insurances with. Alarm and immobilizer, ground anchors, locks and chains.

I figure each lock I use, adds around a minute of breaking time (I always was optimistic) and I'd rather have the locks than insurance. Of course, both would be nice. Wink
