Went out with 2 of my friends today for a nice long ride and 30miles from home craig (my mate) was over taking me on his RS125 (doing about 95-100mph) then out of no where he just seemed to slow right down without his brake light coming on.
he was on the outside lane and the car behind him had to slam on his brakes. he had to pull over both lanes. Dam my heart stopped.
He had no brake down recovery so we had to wait for 2 and half hours for his dad to come pick his bike up.
was only about 6 months ago since the last engine went bang.
So craig and his bike is on its way home. Me and my other mate rob thought it was a good idea to go home.
we got about 15 miles away from brighton when me and rob come to a set of lights. He pulled up aside of me giving it loads of revs. So i was like "fine ill have to kane ya ass off the lights AGAIN rob"
We both fly off the lights when i hear a loud POP sound. look in my mirror and theres rob pulled over on the side of the road.
His poor TZR has gone bang. We know why his bike when bang bang tho. He forgot to put 2 stroke oil in it :-S
I feel well shitty. i was the only one who got back with a working bike.
craig said once he fixes his RS he will be selling it and getting an NSR. So in a few weeks you all shell be seeing an add for his bike

Forgetting things like two stroke oil is the reason I'll never buy a two stroke. That and I hear they're unreliable.
Mind you, when a four stroke goes wrong, normally it's a small component that needs replacing, whereas two strokes seem to go with style. At least, that's my expireance (someone correct that, the spell check doesn't know what word it is no matter how many times I try to correct it) ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |

Really depends on the bike. Iv done over 6000miles on my NSR with hardly any problems. The only one problem iv had is my starter motor messed up which i needed to fix.
The thing is, 4T are more reliable on the hole then 2T bikes but you get so much more power out of a 2T 125 then you do out of a 4T 125 bike.
My mates got a CBR125R ands its slow as shit. I have to keep pulling over and waiting for him.
my NSR kicks out about 23bhp and my mates CBR kicks out 12bhp tops.
If you want something to get you to work and back get a 4T 125 if you want something fun to ride get a 2T 125 ____________________ TS50 (sold) NS125F (sold) NSR125R-K (write off after 2 crashes) CG125 (nicked) XR125L-3 (Sold )-: ) DR125SM '11 (sold yay) XL125V '12 (In love with this bike) XT600E '04 (fun on the dirt) |

well you have fuck all experance
when a four-stroke goes pop they do a lot more expensive damage than a simple two-stroke engine which are piss easy and cheap to re-build (four-strokes drop valves/ snap cam chains / snap push rods) ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

I have to agree with Tatters (although perhaps without quite so much profanity ).
When a 4-stroke engine goes wrong it is like a bomb has gone off inside your engine.
Give you an example. A big-end bearing collapsed on my mates GPZ305. In roughly chronological order, this allowed the piston to strike a valve, the valve bent cracking the cylinder head, the piston deformed in the bore and seized up, the engine tried to keep turning and ripped the gudgeon pin out through the bottom of the piston scattering shards of aluminium all over the inside of the crankcase, this also put a 20 degree bend in the con-rod which proceeded to score the barrel. Oh, and the crank got badly bent which in turn knocked the timing sensor for the CDI off its mounting.
Scratch one engine.
The two strokes probably just need a rebore and a new piston kit. (maybe some new main bearings, but probably not) ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

depends on the 2 stroke in question, the RS125 is well known for seizing up,
i had an rd125lc mark 2 with 38000 miles on the clock.
my mate had it for 3 years before me and hammered it everyday, and i bought it of him and hammered it for a further 3 years so thats six years of constant abuse and it only had 1 rebore between us (didn't really need it) and the spinning thing on the left of the crank (alternator / rotor ?) failed, and thats it, Never let us down, never siezed,or displayed any signs that the engine was about to pop, so there, the RS sucks, yamaha rule ____________________ visit Collective Knowledge |

Hi
A 4 stroke going bang will be messy, unless it is something minor like the head gasket.
Fail to top the oil up on a 2 stroke and a red light comes on to remind you to do it soon. Do the same on a 4 stroke and a red light comes on to tell you that the oil pressure just dropped to nothing and you have wrecked the engine.
This piston is the result of a 4 stroke going bang.
While you can say that maintenance will stop a 4 stroke going bang, the same pretty much applies to a 2 stroke. Replacing the piston is maintenance (and probably easier than adjusting the valves on many shimmed engines).
The NSR is not really that much more reliable than the RS. Seems to suffer mechanical abuse a bit better, but also seems to have more major electrical issues.
How many miles had this RS done since the piston and rings were replaced?
All the best
