My other half and I were driving to see folks on Fathers Day when we went through a village with a speed trap (good use of a copper's time). My other half signalled the thumbs down Thumbs Down to oncoming riders to let them know. Trouble is, I'm not sure if they thought we were Thumbs Down to bikers, or if they knew what we meant?

How would you, and do you, signal danger to other riders when you are not on your bike?

(If you were riding on the A29 on Fathers day and saw us let me know!)

Last week on a lil ride I was on, there was a 3 car pile up ahead as I came round a corner a lorry saw me accelerating out of it at some pace and flashed his lights, I thought I was about to see a speed trap, instead it was a pileup. Smile

So Flashing lights in other words. Laughing

flash your lights and stick your arm out of the window and wave it up and down (highway code slow down signal)
99% of people in cars or bikes know exactly what you mean , if they don't they shouldnt be on the fucking road and deserve to get busted.

Doesn't waving your arm up and down mean that you're slowing down? Confused

How do you signal this when you are on your bike?

Flashing lights is the universal signal for "look at me, here I am, my lights are working" Rolling Eyes Wink Wink

To answer the question, what works for me is a flash of the headlight and a Thumbs Down gesture - works in car or on bike.

What he said. In the Highway Code it states that a waving of the arm indicates to the vehicles behind that YOU are slowing down. Could cause confusion for drivers behind. Smile

The drivers behind have just been through the same speed trap etc that you have so normally know what your trying to signal.

Ever had a foot plod try to stop you ? or tell you to slow down ?
they use the arm up and wave it up and down gesture as its the ONLY recognised hand signal for slow down in the highway code

Speed trap = Thumb down, on bike, in car or wagon its universal. Just one quick flash to get there attention first.

Oh and don't let a copper see you warning anyone, its called perverting the course of justice and they don't like it!

How can you pervert the course of justice if a crime hasnt been commited yet?

Surely you are preventing a crime from occuring, and should get some kind of small reward!

If they were already speeding when you warned them, then they're already commiting the crime. You're aiding them get away with the crime, which is perverting the course of justice.

I like the way you think though! Very Happy

Now we're getting philosophical :-

"If you commit a speeding offence on the highway, and nobody sees (except you presumably), does it count as a crime?"

"What is the sound of one hand revving?" etc.

Personally, I only use one hand to rev anyway Laughing Very Happy Laughing Mr. Green

If I'm warning people of *an accident blackspot* I'll do the 'calm down' hand gesture of palm downwards movements a few times and then gesture over my shoulder. If I'm in the car, I flash the lights at them.

France was the best country I've been in for warnings about speed traps, every vehicle coming towards you goes mental trying to warn you, normally about 2 miles from the camera Thumbs Up

Cheers

I was warned by a car of a camera ahead, he flashed his brake lights at me. I knew it was there as I use the road all the time but it was nice to know there are people who'll look out for others on the road.

this signal works with me, keeps me within the law when in the UK,
we get used to riding on deristricted roads up north of the IOM, so when I,m back in civilisation (liverpool) I,m constantly barracked for speeding, and there seems to be cameras everywhere

One of the signals that ive seen that works pretty good is hanging one of your arms out the window, and make a flapping down motion 2 show "slow down" kinda like you would do to imitate a bird i guess Confused
