Hi

https://www.expressandstar.com/articles/news/es/article_77212.php

Seems that a few local concilors do not appreciate it being pointed out that the A519 goes some of the way from Stafford to Stoke and has no cameras, unlike the dual carraigeway A34 which is plastered with cameras.

All the best

Keith

it's working then isnt it... those cameras will prevent LOADS of accidents and save lives on the A34, cos EVERYONE will use the A519.

Load of rubbish - he was just pointing out that there was an alternative route to the location, courtesy of the road atlas he was presenting (which is freely available to anyone who wants to buy it).

Cameras, if in fact they do save lives (hmmmmm Confused ) have to appear in supposed accident blackspots. Isn't the alternative route that Clarkson pointed out therefore a safer route?

Besides, doesn't the council/who ever puts up this infernal speed revenue cash points have to put up signs to say its there, to act a deterrent to speeders?

FFS what a bunch of no life tossers

The rules for speed cameras state there to stop speeding so are signposted and conspicuous (the yellow box) and may only be placed where there have been 3 or more KSI accidents. So knowing there the speed cameras are should encourage people to drive more safely through roads with cameras as there accident black spots.

So knowing what routes are littered with black spots what safe sensible driver wouldn’t take a safer route?

But alas we know the real reason for speed cameras is to make money out of drivers caught out by cameras. It the only reason not to have them marked is to make it easy to easer caught out.

“Safety concerns” if you believe that I have a nice bridge to sell you.

I have no doubt anyone that goes through that route will know the other road doesn't have cameras, and no doubt they therefore use it.

On the other hand, if we had more traffic police, who like, moved about, and caught dangerous drivers... Nah, stupid idea!

The A34 is stupidly infested with cameras. Very much doubt any of them are at an accident black spot. Think there are over 15 between Stafford town centre and the A34, about 13 of which are on a dual carraigeway with a centre reservation, most of which is a 60 speed limit (used to be NSL).

They have justified the cameras with a couple of accidents. One was caused by someone pulling out of a pub car park in front of someone on the dual carraigway. The other is at a dodgy junction (just after the brow of a hill). At first it had a camera 100 yards before it, but the camera was moved to a more profitable location a couple of hundred yards after the junction.

All the best

Staffordshire (where the roads in question are) got rid of its traffic police when they brought the scamera partnership in. During the changeover year the number killed rocketed (really must dig out all the figures).

One of my neighbours was a traffic copper. Now they struggle to find anyone qualified to investigate serious accidents, or anything else they used to routinely do.

All the best

Are we talking Yarlet bank here? If so I have seen a few near misses with the school, where MUM in her 4x4 (posh school, no people carriers here they are for rif raf) pulls out without looking as her car is bigger than yours and you should be in the outside lane anyway.

I never use that road anyway now due to all the scameras, the 519 is nice and twisty. Twisted Evil

*edit* I would have thought he would be in more trouble for thrashing a Merc accross europe at 200mph, then again maybe not. Rolling Eyes

Hi

Yep, Yarlet bank. Complete with a speed camera in the middle of a 1 mile straight dual carraigeway.

There is a school there, but to be honest more likely the kids would be picked up by helicopter than walk to school.

Suspect the cameras have reduced the accident rate, because far less people use it these days.

All the best

Dammit!

The A519 used to be a nice quiet-ish road... It's now going to be nicely busy with Top-Gear viewers.

Very Happy what a stupid quote.
I'm assuming it's accurate, it must have been given to a journalist and we know how accuratly they report the 'facts'.

I had an image of people trying to sneak past cameras that would leap out and try to give first aid and CPR by the side of the road Wink Rolling Eyes

I think what he meant was why evade those cash generating cameras on the A34 Doh!

So this is what Peter Jones says: Eccleshall Councillor Peter Jones said: “He’s effectively telling people to break the law and come speeding through our town because they’ll get away with it. I think it is disgraceful and Clarkson should stick to what he does best, which is apparently driving fast cars around airfields.

“We have many problems with speeding on A519 and for him to tell millions of people they can evade life saving cameras on the A34 by speeding through Eccleshall instead shows what an irresponsible twit he is.”

Agree or not? Right you lot, get emailing:

Eccleshall is always gridlocked at rush hour you would be lucky to reach 10mph any other time you can't speed due to a dumb ass mini-island in the center. Mr. Green

Do Councillors actually have a purpose in society, I may be wrong but I just see them as well-off old people that think their opinions matter and that other people listen to them.

Seriously, what are their jobs? Rolling Eyes

Depends on what sort of councillor. For example, parish councillors don't actually get paid and at least believe they are trying to do something for their local community. You could offer the retort "If you aren't happy about what is happening, why not stand for election yourself?"

Douglas Adams precept that anyone who puts themselves forwards for a position of political influence should under no circumstances be allowed to do so still seems to hold true in the majority of cases though.

Imperial Earth? I can't remember which book that was from...

Having seen the Top Gear episode last night, no one would even have seen where the road was Clarkson flashed the map so quickly. Besides, in a car you can hardly speed down there, it's either too busy or you get stuck behind a BMW driver who doesn't want to scratch their willy extension.

thats strange lots of the local GATSOs have been moved recently , they vanished for a few days and then came back and were placed behind large signs , so that they are effectively hidden.

One was clear as day (the location) and it was moved forward behind a street sign,

another was moved slightly in behind a newly built bus shelter and another one was moved so that they pub sign nearby hides it completely

If you can't see the camera clearly from 100 meters it is illegally placed and the fines are there for unenforceable. Although sadly 99% of people don’t know that so will end up been caught out and paying up.

It is not illegally placed, it is just placed against the guidelines for the scamera partnerships. The fines can still be legally enforced, just that the scamera partnership should not be able to claim back the running costs of that camera from the treasury.

All the best
