In a bid to improve my visibility on the roads I decided to get a hi-viz waistcoat and wearing it for the first time today I noticed I was ignored by all other bikers. Return journey and take the waistcoat off and other bikers nod at me. Is this just a coincidence?

Dunno mate, but personally I'm not really bothered whether other riders nod at me. Your safer wearing a hi-vis mate, so do it, I know I'll be wearing mine when I get my test done, and if other riders aren't going to acknowledge me then .Middle Finger

Out on the bike today, I got a mixed amount of nods. None from those with black visors though. It's a conspiracy!

I think the problem lies with the weather. Far too many fair weather bikers, who think they're still in thier cage, and so they don't think about other people, and therefore don't think about nodding to other riders.

Stupid of me, but I get really upset if a rider doesn't nod to me, unless we're on a dual carriage way. One rider didn't warn me of a mobile speed camera the other day. Luckily a cager behind him did. Was pretty miffed.

I tend to take the view that if you don't have time to spot a speed camera, even a mobile one, you probably WERE going too fast, as one assumes that you wouldn't have had time to spot, identify and react to a hazard either.

I find that nodding in London is fairly thin on the ground, and that it actually improves when the fair-weather bikers come out. No doubt this is due to the fact they are excited to be on their run-abouts again, whereas those of us who commute every day are a little less thrilled to be out again!

Even when they can zap you from 1km away? They seem to often set themselves up to zap people as they come round a bend. No way to spot them in advance, but if they were a hazard on the road where they are parked then there would be loads of time to react.

All the best

Exactly where this one was, coming from Dover to Broadstairs on the A256 just over a crest, was a good half mile or so away, zaps you as you come over the crest. Plenty of distance to stop in. *shrug* I just check the local safety camera website now, says where they're going to be. Wink

I've got to disagree with this one too. I've just been done for speeding (again), 50 in a 40. It's a dual carriageway through an industrial estate that used to be a 60, before Northamptonshire went camera crazy. All of the junctions have sliproads, the paths are all set back from the road. There's no shops, schools nor housing. No real reason for it to be a 40. If it were a hazard and not a mobile camera van, I could have quite easily stopped long before it. Since it was a camera though, you've been nabbed the moment you see it.

Thought they were only allowed to place cameras in recognised accident black spots?
Some one must have been binning it there on a regular basis for the cameras to be there.

That's because we are too busy surviving!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Having said that this morning, gave and was given an usually high proportion of nods.

Probably because they can see sod all out of them and never noticed another bike Laughing

For finding out where mobile cameras are I check out the local radio station, ok not much good if you're going any distance but great when travelling local.

Nope, they are just guidelines. It used to be that they could not claim back any of the running costs from a scamera that did not comply with the guidelines, but now they are allowed to place some scameras where they want.

Also the rules for mobile scameras are far more lax, and the whole lot is based on "killed or seriously injured", yet seriously injured pretty much covers anything from a broken finger or suspected concussion upwards.

To add insult to the whole thing the scameras are only meant to be within a km or so of the "accident black spot", so they can quite happily set one up on a straight, safe dual carraigeway because a corner people have passed a km back is an accident black spot.

All the best

'Safety' cameras for Kent can be located here.

https://www.kentandmedwaysafetycameras.org.uk/cameras_page04.html

https://www.kentandmedwaysafetycameras.org.uk/cameras_page05.html

I'd suggest going there weekly at least.

Going back to the subject of nodding for a second, I have conducted intensive research into this and have come up with a list of bikers who don't nod at anyone (this is not a definitive list, more of a joke):

1. Harley/cruiser badboy - far too cool to acknowledge that there is anyone else on the planet. Either that or the apehangers have locked their shoulders and neck into a permanent position.

2. BMW tourers - Too busy reciting the full contents of roadcraft to themselves

3. Goldwings - Too busy fiddling with the stereo/aircon/GPS/15 million other buttons.

4. Born again bikers - Too terrified to take their hands off the bars for fear of dying. Either that or they need to hold on to stick their virgin kneesliders further out whilst wobbling round corners upright.

5. Scooters - can't see you because their Elizabeth Duke jewelry is obscuring their vision.

6. Couriers - still recovering from their latest near-death experience so can't acknowledge you.

Remember, this is a joke Very Happy

Cheers

Grim

I tend to nod at everyone that's on a bike (and yes, I'm one of those black visors!), but I don't think I've had one person nod back who was wearing a hi-viz waistcoat. I think you generally find that the people wearing these are just on their daily commute, and arn't really doing it for the love of biking.

I also think a lot of people only nod to other bikers who are on the same class of bike. It's generally people on sports bikes that nod at me. With other styles of bikes, it's generally 50/50.

i nod to almost every biker, scooter boy, pizza hut boy i see. i tend to get ignored by everyone in stoke newington, but the one nod back i do get is well worth it for some reason Thumbs Up

however going up to potters bar etc everyone nodded at me. it was my first and only ride and i felt accepted even on my lil 125 with the L plates Smile

I wear a hi-viz and I nod at everyone if I'm on a single carriageway. I guess the response is around 50:50 - cruisers and Dry Sunday Afternoon Power Rangers are most likely to ignore me. When the weather's shite (as it is occasionally in Sheffield...) lots more riders reciprocate, probably because they share my pain... Smile

I get nods about 50:50 cos of the L plates on the NSR (test on monday, ergh), prob cos im not a "real" biker, hehe.

But I've just bought a Black VFR, and my gear is all black and grey, and i cant afford to replace any of it, but ive found a hi vis jacket, and im going to damn well wear it, because stealthy is not a good attribute for a biker!

And im already well used to being shunned in the nodding department (sob), so im sure I wont mind. Very Happy

I've noticed quite a few pillions do it aswell.. especially up in the Lake District.. i find it quite amusing when someone rides past and them and their pillion is wearing matching gear and nod at the same time.. i also can't help but nod from time to time as pillion.. i feel like a loser sometimes but i can't help but notice other bikes..
