 |
|
I'm selling the bike (considering advertising it privately) but I've not sold a bike (of any value) before and I have a few concerns.
Basically I'm curious what's the best way to go about viewings & test rides etc. I guess any potential buyer will want to ride it (I would) but how do I protect myself from someone dissappearing around the corner and
1. Abusing it
2. Damaging it
3. Stealing it
According to my pal who is an insurance lawyer, if I hand the keys over for a 'test ride' and it goes missing, my insurance won't pay out. But if someone drops it what then?
I guess people sell bikes all the time with no hassels, I'd appreciate any (constructive) advice.
I'd also be interested in knowing what its worth, I'm not interested in holding out for the absolute best price it just needs to go as I'm off abroad for an indefinite period at the end of the month.
Its a Red 2002 (02) Ducati Monster 600 (not ie), parallel import with 8000 km on the clock, just had its first MOT, new rear tyre and has 12 months tax. Its a very clean and totally original bike.
Thanks. ____________________ John Fish,

Don't allow people to test ride it without first showing insurance to prove they are covered third party, and get them to pay the full amount you asked for as a deposit. They steal it, break it or bin it then they've already paid for it. ____________________ https://www.bikepics.com/members/fuzzbcf/

Sorry for mentioning it twice in a night, but https://www.parkers.co.uk/pricing/used_bike/ is a good start for price.
Also, alot of it is trust really. A few people let me have a go on thier bike if I left pretty much everything I had on me behind. Driving licence, bank card and some cash etc. As for people abusing it, generally, they're not going to really push it, as they don't want to break it. At the end of the day though, accidants happen.
You could ask for a full deposit before they try though? I wouldn't object to that if I were to test ride the bike. ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |

When my ZXR was taken out by my dad for a test ride, he thrashed the fuck out of it all the way through the box. It's no good just trundling round the block for 5 minutes, if it's gonna jump out of gear it'll do it under hard acceleration and what not, so in my opinion you will need to give it a thrashing really to make sure the engine is sound. ____________________ TS50 > Senda 125 > ZXR400 > CB-1 > GSX-R1000 > Bandit 600 > ZXR750 H1 > GSX-R750 SRAD > '98 RR-W Fireblade > T595 Daytona > Hornet 900 > '04 Fireblade > GSX-S1000F (x2) > '23 XSR900 |

Warm the engine up prior to the test ride so if they do thrash it there's less chance of damage. ____________________ https://www.bikepics.com/members/fuzzbcf/

serious buyers will have the cash to secure a test ride under the "you break it you buy it" rule of selling.
just use common sense, if the bloke looks dogey or like a chav just say no. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

if l,m buying bike l would be wary of a bike that had been warmed up before l had arrived, as l owner could be trying to hid various nasty sounds like shagged bearings which would be easyly heard on a cold engine, also the bike may have problems starting when cold. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

I don't mean have it running as they come to see it, but it might be an idea to do a few miles at some point in the day so it's not 'overnight cold.' ____________________ https://www.bikepics.com/members/fuzzbcf/

Personally speaking, i would never let a potential buyer test my bike without handing over the money in cash as a deposit.
I would take them out as a pillion for free.
When buying a bike, one of my stipulations is i want to hear and see it started from cold. If people aren't willing to do that, i assume they are trying to hide something and will take my hard earned money elsewhere.
Caveat emptor and all that. ____________________ Space Monkey #7
