Tips for FZR? *edit*- What a fuggin FANTASTIC bike !!!

Getting the new bike tomorrow.
Biggest I have ridden is the GS500E.
Currently back on the Honda CG.

Any tips for firstly setting off on the FZR?

Quite scary and exciting all in one box !

Is the acceleration greatly much more than the GS ?

Any tips at all on this bike ?
Do you pull clutch in to start, or not ??
Any info is greatly received.

give it a bit of choke when starting and allow the bike to warm up for a few mins. not much diffent to a electric start CG (part from 4 cylinders).

just pull off slowly and you will learn to respect the power.

Yep, it has a LOT more go than the GS500. Basically double the power.

Think you have an electric reserve switch on that one (common on Yamahas, but the early FZR600 has a normal style reserve). Easy to use and easy to find. Basically all it does is when the fuel level drops to a certain level it turns off the fuel pump. When you flick the reserve switch it just powers the pump up again.

The brakes will be a lot more powerful than you are used to.

The bars will be lower. Fine when you get used to them but will be strange at first.

One biggy is that when you turn the handlebars the clocks / mirrors / etc do not move. Something that will feel weird at first after unfaired bikes.

Fuel consumption will probably be at 45~50mpg. You will probably manage about 140 miles before reserve.

The FZR clutches can be quite nasty when hot. It you are getting caught in traffic, try and shift into neutral and release the clutch lever if you are going to be stop for any length of time (eg, traffic lights). Not a major problem, just makes things a bit easier.

Most of all, take it easy and enjoy it. It will handle far better than you will currently be able to believe.

Not too much of the right hand! The acceleration difference will seem huge for the first couple of weeks.

FZR's are fun. keep it in the lower revs (6k-) for about 5 minutes, as most of the power is over 6k. gets a bit vibrationy at 7k. but is good fun

It is just the initial pulling away that is slightly worrying me, you know, with all the bike people there watching me no doubt

As long as I keep it steady and take it very slowly I should be okay.

My Brother-in-law has warned me about the fairing when you turn corners, he said when he first did it he got really freaked out when his mirrors didn't go with him.

Not long to go now...Fiance is picking up his VTR at the mo..then it's my turn

I am currently on a GS500. I have put a deposit down on a FZR6 yesterday and I am picking it up next week. All I can say is it handles 1000 times better, twice the speed, twice the acceleration. When I took it for a test ride, I thought I was doing 30mph when I was doing 70mph so it is very easy to speed. You will be off the mark from the traffic lights alot faster than before. I would say go for it

Insurance is £100 for tpf+t for me at 18 years old, 0 ncb replacing my GS500 insurance at £270 for 6 months and I can ride any other bike.

Did you take it for a test ride before agreeing to purchase it Jodie?

The question isn't a veiled criticism, I'm just curious (and I suppose it might foster a debate on who would or wouldn't). Personally I wouldn't buy any bike before taking it (or at least a demonstration model of it if it's new) for a spin first.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it?s worth.

By the way, the power is totally managable. Don't get scared unless your one of these people that pins the throttle back and dumps the clutch when they first get on a bike.

FUGGIN AMAZING !!!!!

What a day, the FZR is absolutely fantastic, and I am so in love with her !!

Goes up to 80 at a breeze, didn't want to push it today and do more...
Gear changes are so smooth, better than the 125, handling is a dream, brakes are brilliant, engine braking is also smoothly excellent...just a smooth, nice bike.
I am so, so happy.

From the moment I sat on her I felt comfy, like a worn in armchair.
At first the fairing did freak me out, but after 3/4 turns I got used to it.
A fantastic buy I would say.

Which insurance company lets you add NCB together? I thought the deal was that your NCB has to be a constant stream of years insurance, not seperate vehicles insured for one year and added together.

I am getting a YZF600R, the Thundercat. Whoops, all this bike code talk got me confluzzled. Yes, Nath is correct. £370 including the GS500 insurance price. Still quite good if you ask me... Now just to get the datatool fitted
