All the later 400s are pretty similar.

In my opinion, the best one is the one which you can find the best price in the best condition at the time. No point getting the, say, CBR, because you've been told it's a great bike, to find that the one you got was more expensive than others and was knackered from previous abuse - when a bike that wasn't reccomended may have cost you less and be better performing, because it was better looked after.

Is it?
Take it you've not seen the pointless fold out footpegs that aren't needed on the cbr4. Also, the rvf has single sided swingarm, usd forks and a slipper clutch as standard. Can't see the zxr being more over engineered than the honda 400's, especially as rvf cost around £7k when new so i'm led to believe.

My 2p's worth has got to be a recommendation for the Honda NC30. Better out the crate than the RVF - so more performance for half the price. Still looks good, sounds stunning and albeit for a tricky-to-work-on-engine, absolutely bullet proof. Only weakness is dodgy rectifiers going pop, but all Honda 400s (and some 600s?) are prone to that.

Just being pedantic, but it doesn't that I'm aware.
I know the NC30 has an odd half'n'half clutch thing, but it definitely isn't a full slipper clutch.

i have heard that sv650 is a good alternative to a 400
same power, similar weight
more torque at low revs cos its a vtwin so it handles restriction better

you can get a newish sv650 for the price of an oldish 400 and for me insurance would be less on a sv650

discuss

I don't think that the NC35 does have a slipper clutch - the gearbox/clutch setup is almost identical to the previous NC30, apart from having shorter ratios in the first 3 gears.

Besides, a slipper clutch isn't really necessary on a bike that won't lock up the rear wheel on down-changes; both the NC35 and 30 put out less than 30lb-ft.

The SV650 is a good bike, doesn't feel as torquey low down as a Hornet 600 or the like, but has a very strong midrange for a small twin, especially around 7,000rpm. In a straight line, a standard SV will beat a standard 400. However, when the going gets twisty, I have no doubt that the 400 pocket rockets will show up its 'budget' chasis. Top fun trying though, and wouldn't be far behind. Plus, the Honda V4s have got exceptional build quality; a clean 15 year old NC30 will show up the cheaper finish on the SV650 (and some design details as well).

Hmm, not really tried and tested. Top speed of the zxr should be a bit higher, but tbh I think the acceleration is pretty similar between the two.

Will have to swap for a ride soon, my memory of the zxr is rusty.
