No, its not a test, but if they really think you're dangerous, they wont give it to you. When i went to refresh my CBT about a year ago, only two out of the four of us got the certificate.

I didnt see the incident (which was on the 2 hour, on the road bit of the CBT), but when we got back the guy was telling the 2 guys they were downright dangerous, almost got themselves killed drifting lanes on a roundabout, and that they should give up on bikes and get a car instead!

I think he was a bit harsh to be honest, just wanted to point out that they can withhold the CBT if they think its necessary. But I've done my CBT twice now (ran out the first time), and ive always found it a really fun day, so dont worry.

Everyone - including the instructors - says CBT isn't a test. But, when you think about it, and in reality, it is a test.

It's a test to see if you're competent enough to ride a bike safely - if at all!

When I took my CBT a while ago, there was one poor girl who had never riden a bike before. I felt sorry for her because she was so determined to give it a try. But, unfortunately, she had to have both feet down all the time to feel stable, she stalled the bike every single time she let the clutch out, and she dropped (or put down) the bike every time she came to a stand still!

Needless to say, she failed her CBT. And I really did feel sorry for her. Especially since I myself tried my best to reassure her not to worry.

Therefore, contrary to everyone elses belief that CBT is not a test, and that everyone can pass it, I have to say it is a test. But, as it's been mentioned before in this forum, if you don't pass the CBT then, mainly for your own safety, you really aren't ready for riding on the roads. Agreed.

agreed, when I did my CBT 2 weeks ago the trainer said he recently turned down two 16 year olds from getting there certificate as they didn't listen to what he was saying and messed about, he thought they were unsafe on the road so therefore failed them.

At the end of the day its all about safety if the instructor/trainer doesn't think you will be safe then he/she won't pass you. The triner said to me if he would of issued a certificate to them it would be a risk to his job as if anything happened to them they may wonder why they managed to get the CBT.

i think people have a certain snobbery about the CBT requiring any effort at all.

It's hard to learn how to ride a bike for the first time, and obviously if you can't, you won't get your certificate.

Think people who have passed their CBT's should be just as proud as someone who's passed their full test, it's harder to learn to ride than it is to ride for 40 minutes when you've been riding for the past god-knows-how-long!

I don't think it's snobbery, I think it's arrogance. Especially in youngsters (and no offence to yourself or any other intelligent youngster intended).

For example: We can all do 'point and squirt' riding. Just open the throttle and go. No problem. No balancing required, no traffic, no obstructions, no road hazards.

But, how many of those youngsters actually have any concept of the dangers of biking? Just put the lid on and away they go. Tee shirt, shorts and trainers. That's the lot. 'I'm really posing now, and don't I just look sexy on my new rev 'n' go bike?'

Yeh, great. You stupid idiot! And the first time you come off - even at 30mph - there'll be more human skin to pick up than bike parts.

Will they ever learn?

And I wonder how on earth some of these morons ever managed to pass their CBT. But they do!

I've only just passed my CBT, could have easily gone and bought a bike and paid the insurance off monthly, but I'm planning to get a loan/save up so I can get bike, insurance, and all the gear I need to get me going on the same day (Pricing up gear like leathers, boots, gloves, waterproofs and a back protector and subtracting that from how much i think my bike and insurance will cost me).

I did my CBT in jeans, Sidi boots and a leather jackets gloves etc but my legs felt vulnerable! Smile

No probs in the gear you wore for your CBT. Your legs will always feel vunerable in jeans, but they're the next best thing to nothing!

Don't go overboard with riding gear. You don't have to spend thousands on leathers just to 'keep up with the joneses. Just buy the best you can afford. All bikers will respect you when they see you've at least tried to protect yourself. Nod and they'll nod back.

It's a great community. Once you're out on the roads you'll realise that.

I'm not going to buy A* or anything, just a nice function set of leathers from the nice chaps at hein gericke,

I already have some leather (A jacket) but I don't know what brand it is, just that there's a zip at the back to zip nito a 1 piece and its' really thick and heavy! very stretchy and tight as well so I can assume it new and a good fit?

I'm scared of riding, but I can't wait to do it! I talk/think about bikes nearly every moment that I'm awake! It's gripped me for about a year and I still don't have a bloody bike yet!

Might try man whoring for a bit to raise some extra cash!
