PostPosted: 14:21 - 11 Jul 2005    Post subject: Yet another crash... Reply with quote

My brother, Spike, was travelling to work yesterday at about 12 noon when a female driver pulled out in front of him. It was an open 40 limit road and she was pulling out across his lane into the oncoming lane. The trouble is, she didn't look where she was going (was talking to her boyfriend/husband) and as she pulled into Spike's lane, he tried to swerve right and pull into the oncoming lane to avoid her, expecting her to look where she was going and brake for him to squeeze past. This, she didn't do and just kept going without looking and he hit her front wing close to the headlight and went over the top of the bonnet (along with the bike). He landed on his ass after rolling and went to get up but fell unconscious for about 10 minutes. He only remembers hitting the ground and getting straight up which is weird, witnesses say he was lying on the floor for at least 10 minutes. Laughing

Images are attached. This just goes to show that no matter how well you do things by the book there are still times when you can have a crash. It's lucky he always wears all his gear, it could have been worse. Just have a look at the pictures...

By the way, he isn't injured, just a bit of muscle ache.

pass my regards to your bro, but from first look he might be lucky with his bike, he might get away with it only being the forks and headlight that needs replacing and of course the foot peg.

Spike's phoned the insurance, they say it's a non-fault claim. In other words, he should be able to claim for a new bike and gear etc. They are supplying a courtesy ped (mwahaha) on Wednesday for him to ride to and from work. Thumbs Up

Laughing

I see what you mean now. Took me a few glances to realise.

I'm also very annoyed with the bikers I've seen wearing t-shirts and shorts on big bikes, and not riding too sensibly either. They will learn their lesson, hopefully it won't kill them. Confused

why are you annoyed at bikers wearing no protective clothing?

if they want to have no skin left and look like a burns victim then thats upto them

yes it's a pain for the plastic surgeons and the nurses but hey what do the bikers care

Yes and 45mph is the maximum he was going. I don't consider that to be a dangerous speed considering how open the road is. Besides, he had slowed down quite a bit before he hit the car. If he had hit it at 45mph then he would have been in a bit of a worse state I think.

even though he may have been speeding the law is on his side.

a girl at work pulled out of a side street into the path of a car that was going 50mph in a 30 limit. she assumed that the car was travelling at 30mph.

and a policeman told her that it was still her that was fault even though the car was breaking the speed limit!!!

The thing is though, he was probably only a couple of mph over the limit as most speedos over-read. I doubt you would even get pulled by the police if you were seen doing 45mph in a 40 limit. Probably because they can't be arsed, but also because it's not THAT dangerous. Razz

glad hes ok, but i have to say, that looks like an accident that could have been avoided. never expect tin boxes to do anything other than try to have you off, assess the situation before they move and plan your response, brake in a straight line, use yer horn and hope for a clear escape route to present itself. that would be my last choice escape route! riding into the path of oncoming traffic with another minor road to his right Shocked

i would have been riding on the crown of the road approacing that junction too...

No I don't think you are correct. He has learned from experience (and so have I) that when people pull out in front of you they tend to slam the brakes on in the middle of your lane, thats if they notice you, so you end up going around the front of them while shaking your head. This has happened many times. In this case the woman driving the car just kept going and didn't look where she was going at any point, well, until he went over the bonnet.

Don't let the L's fool you, my brother has been riding for about 18 months and covers 40 or 50 miles a day, I've seen how he rides and I consider him to be a good rider. It's easy to say an accident is avoidable, but it's only avoidable if you know what the other person is thinking.

im with gavin. from the diagram and the pics i wd have thought it was avoidable

Id prefer to steer behind the car coming out.

Id aim to be where they were not where they are moving to.

sounding the horn can be good but it can rattle them.

Id slow down if someone coming out of a junction hasnt looked at me.

Another factor is they say you are twice as likely to get hit on a black bike.

I ride a silver bike and they say you are half as likely as normal to get hit on a silver bike but unfortunately it has a black panel on it !Wink

All of the riding instructors I have known (and my own experience as well), have always said go in front of a vehicle that pulls out, as 90% of them brake. It's just unfortunate that this dizzy bint was one of the 10%.

I'm glad that your brother is not too hurt, and I hope his claim doesn't take too long to sort Thumbs Up
