Doesn't take 'em long eh ??!!!

Bike has been at the house since Saturday...
(locked up at the front, highly visible as is in front window, houses close by, on a MAIN, big road, police station about 15 seconds walk up the road!)

Just got up, there is a note through my door from my neighbour, (2 doors down, they too have bikes, a Harley and that)...
"..at 11.15 a large white car pulled up, 2 men looked at your bike, then drove off... at midnight 2 lads came up to your bike, lifted the cover and began to 'mess' with your chains and stuff..."

WTF !!?? Shocked
A ring or what ?

How DARE they try and case/take my bike !! I am so angry.
Why don't they go and get a proper job instead of stealing peoples hard-earned stuff !!?? No good chavvy scum !
steps down.. Confused Wink

Right..I have a Monster lock on the bike, attached to a concreted-in ground anchor, I have another heavy duty chain on the front wheel, I have a disc lock (Thatcham approved) on the front also.
I am going to LOCK the cover down tonight somehow...
QUESTION:
If I want to put a CCTV or webcam type thing at the front of the house, would YOU put a visible sign and make the camera visible, or would you say that attracts more people to the fact that there may be a nice bike under the cover ??

Thanks in advance,
J xx

No..for one, I was recommended against, as it would drain the battery !?

What are alarmed disc locks like ? I have seen a few of them

Is it quite well lit in front of your house, security lighting is a suprising good deterrent. As for CCTV. You could either get one of those fake camera jobs, or RF concepts do some really good ones that can be wired up to your PC. I was looking at getting one myself as I had 4 attempts on my scooter in as many weeks recently. A new garage door, ground anchor, door defender, and several new locks later they seem to have given in for now.
https://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/cctv.htm

Also might be worth getting alarms for the bikes if you haven't done already.

Its annoying to have to spend so much money on time on security because of some bloody pikeys, but after spending all the cash on mine I do sleep better knowing there a bit safer.

Hope they don't come back, although I would have thought they will have another go.

Hope you get something sorted and your bikes remain safe.

Regarding the batterys drain alarms thing:
The cheap 30 squid ebay jobs will kill batterys quite fast, however any decent new alarm will more than likely have a power saving feature and draw very little power from the battery. It may also save a bit of money on insurance as all the half assed ones are thatcham approved.

Have you reported it to the police? Might seem pointless, but we pay taxes that pay there wages. Worth doing just so they know whats going on.

Doesn't help. mine was nicked from about 20 metres walk from the entrace to one of the biggest police stations in the south west (bristol central). Police couldnt even be bothered to look up the cctv footage. They are only interested in monet generating tickets and doughnuts.

get one of those motion activated floodlights. a decent alarm/immobilisor (thatcham cat 1 if possible.) and an air rifle Twisted Evil

No alarm?

Get one, a cheap one off ebay and fit it yourself (or the partner Wink)

I would invest in cctv, yes, and I would make it known that you have it running. Try and make your cover look grubby and tatty, and get it to cover your rear wheel completely (big fat tyre = fast bike Wink)

I'd hate to hear of your bike being stolen Jodie, so invest wisely. CCTV and an alarm isn't expensive, well, it doesn't have to be.

Wheres the 'storm parked??????? And why isn't yours chained to it.

If I were you I'd try & find somewhere else to keep your bike overnight.

But you could have a good bit of fun here...

Move your bike somewhere else, but for the next few nights put the cover over something of equal size so it looks like its still there..

then when they come and lift the cover off...BAM!!you've borrowed your neighbours pet rattlesnake which has become particullaly distresed by being woken by pikeys!... or something else along the lines of.

EDIT: make sure you have also borrowed a good camcorder and have it recording over night, would love to see pikeys get stiched up

Kind of weird those neighbours saw both events that night, TBH that’s lucky or suspicious…..
Anyways, with those security measures you have on there now means that these people are going to have to access and carry out a stage 3 attacks. No doubt those nosey neighbours will hear this but a stage 3 involves powered tools for the job and the fact it is in clear view.
Try the personal rape alarm trick on the cover, attach the pull cord to the bike and then to the cover, that will make then fuck off straight away. The disc lock and chains sound like a job for more than a manual cutting tool (I guess they could lift the whole thing up into a van.
Elliot’s motorcycles in Cricklade (01793-751752) will fit a Solalarm Thatcham CAT 1 Alarm/immobiliser for £195.
Taurus cat 1 thatcham approved immobiliser £200
SLA-835T Alarm/immobiliser.Thatcham approved £199
Or data tag for £100 fitted or £50 supplied.

Hope this helps you out a bit, CCTV is good for watching them the next day on the VHS taking the bike (or vandalising it) but police wont know who it is from the fuzzy camera.

Jodie, have you considered investing in some concrete blocks with a hole in? Thread the chain through those and then through the wheel.

Although, a mate of mine was telling me last week that he saw some crooks being nicked at the side of the road. The cops had opened their van up, with bikes inside, but they also had industrial strength bolt cutters and a mobile generator!! His words were "Just goes to show that if they want it, they'll get it".

We can only make it as difficult as possible, but if they've got the time and inclination, they can get any of them.

I use an <<Acumen>> alarm system, cheap and cheerful and screams like a stuck pig if anyone triggers it, great for letting you know someone is tampering.
Been using it for 3 years, and it's still not killed the battery. That's using the bike once or twice a week these days, sometimes a few weeks at a stretch between getting it out.

I'd expect your other halfs 'Storm to be taken first. Confused

Go buy some rape alarms and put them under the cover in such a way that if you lift the cover off then you'll set them off.

I wouldn't advertise the fact you have CCTV, the less your house, garden and bike stand out the better. A sign saying "caution, CCTV" is a simple way of letting people know you have something worth stealing in your garden.

Have a sign on the front gate (if you have one) reading...

All bike theifs will be shot, all survivers will be shot again. Course, you need a gun to back up the sign also, but it cant be that hard to get one.. Very Happy

Or you could attach a rape alarm to the front gate, or where ever they come in though with a trip wire (fishing line) so they wont even get near your bike before it goes off.

Only problem then is you have to be around to hear it, most people just ignore alarms..

if you put a camera up make sure you put a visible sign up aswell

if someone does nick it if it goes to court then you can use the video as evidence, where as no sign = no evidence

Get an alarm. No, get a good alarm. If you worry about the battery, get a trickle charger (such as an optimate).

plant pots all around the bike filled with battery acid. Sort any neighbours thirsty cats out at the same time.

The best advice I can give you is to take that short walk to the Police station, go in and arrange a visit by your local crime prevention officer (usually a specific roled officer) who will do a full crime prevention survey of your house and bike.

I think probably the most important thing about locking up your bike is not having it visible. Most of the neds around my area know full well i have a bike, and im not suprised if they know exactly where i live. The thing is that i keep my bike around the back inside a shed, and im pretty confident that i would hear someone coming through the heavy gate, breaking into my shed and wheeling my bike back through the gate (which is a right angle and the bike has to be lifted). Infact i woke up this morning to be told that i had left the shed open all night last night with my house keys in the lock...but nothing happened because its not visible. If you dont have a back garden or close etc (anywhere its out of sight) ive seen boxes that you can put your bike in. TBH i think if they see a big box rather than a big bike, they wont give a toss.

Get a dog, so much as a squirrel farts on my drive he goes nuts.

I am guessing you dont have a garage, thus if you read MCN, they are
always advertising them small bike garages for about £500. I know its a lot of money, but it would be more protected, plus it would be better for the bike.

I guess if you looked around, you might be able to get a suitable, strong metal shed, that would do the job.

A note on CCTV (I asked the police about this).

If you want it to be admissable in court.

It MUST be time and date stamped.
You MUST keep a log of when you checked the Time and Date settings.
If the camera overlooks ANY public areas then you MUST display a sign stating they are in use.

There is no point at all having a covert CCTV camera with no signage as any evidence it gathers will be inadmissable in court and the camera itself is not acting as a deterrant. You can hide the camera though, providing you have a sign up.

The sign should read along the lines of:

"Warning. CCTV. Video cameras in use on these premises for the purposes of public safety and crime prevention. 24 hour video recording." Then add the name of the operator (ie you) and some contact details (ie your phone number)

You can buy CCTV systems that hook up to your video recorder and switch it on when they detect movement in Argos by the way. I had one, it was very good but needs a fair bit of light to work, security lighting would be a good idea anyway.
