I've been wondering about this for a while, what are those white squares which you sometimes see painted on sections of the road for? I've seen them on a variety of road types, NSL roads, dual carriage ways and motorways. They are about a foot square, and you usually find a couple of them spaced out over a couple of miles of road in the center of a lane. The only thing I can think is that they are for calibrating something for the police, perhaps car speedos? Anybody actually know what they are for?

Hi

They are a set distance apart so the police can time you between them and calculate your speed.

All the best

i think they are for a helicoptor to see if a car is speeding, not sure what the exact distance is between them but a overhead coptor can time the distance. not sure if they can prosicute from it

It's what Keith said init. The Police set the time from one to another to work out your average speed between the two points. They can also use things like bridges, etc, using the VASCAR system.

I've always thought that VASCAR was a bit shady - doesn't it all come down to a copper pressing a start and stop button at the correct times? Must be a pretty whopping margin of error.

If it were only for 5 seconds then yes, it would be quite high but considering they can follow you for as long as they like if they're unmarked it becomes a very accurate tool.

Hi

Vascar is not that accurate, and can be totally inaccurate if the operator wants.

All the best

I got 3 points in the car a few years ago on the basis of a VASCAR system in a following police car - I was timed over 0.18 miles and found to be doing 89mph... I make that 7.28 seconds. If it actually took me 8 seconds it would have been more like 81mph - quite a swing Smile
