weve got to collect my new zxr400 this week, but i have no license so obviously i cant ride it home, me dad said he would as hes had a license for years, but hes not insured.
he doesnt want a full insurance policy as he will only be riding it for 2 hours and doesnt want to be insured on it permanently.

is there an insurance company who would insure him on the bike for a couple of days or even a 24 hour period??

Hi

A few will do it, but it will not be that cheap.

Consider insuring it yourself and adding your dad as a named drivers (try a quick Ebike quote to see the costs).

Where have you got to get it from?

All the best

Keith

Hire a Transit van or similar. That's what I've always done. Transit's are fun to drive too. Thumbs Up

Hi

Got a car with a tow bar? You can borrow the trailer if you need to.

All the best

I had the same problem with a car, they wouldnt iunsure me until I was twenty one and would they fuck budge, wouldnt even insure me for six hours to bring it back. In the end up my sister talked to her imsurance company and they agreed to cover her for 24 hours. Do you know another biker that could do this for you with his insurance company?

Im insured for any bike thrid party but it wouldnt count unless the bike was insured by someone else.

I wonder how much a suitable van would cost to rent?

£30 to £50 in my area. Depends on the condition of the company/van really. Shocked

You should be able to get a van for £40 odd and then there's the diesel cost. It's not a bad price to pay to make sure you get the bike home safely. Thumbs Up

On top of that though you have to get the bike into the van and have it secured for the trip back, or it could go really wrong really quickly!

A van should cost <£50, with a deposit of £80-100. They'll also expect you give it back with a full tank of diesel.

Some things to remember: a sturdy plank for a ramp (scaffolding planks work fine), rope/ tie down straps to tie the bike down in the van (try to get a van specifically with tie-down points), something to strap the brake pedal/ lever to hold the brakes on (cable/ zip ties should be fine).

Edit: some blankets/ old duvet/ similar are also useful to pad things out and to prevent scratching by ropes, for example.

Ours cost £27.50 just for the evening, plus whatever fuel, ours came with none so we gave it back with none. Didn't need a rmap but it was only an rs50, a ramp would be advisable with a 400. Razz Put the bike in gear and tue down the brake lever, a couple of ratchet straps will come in handy, they are only about £4 each off ebay. Failing that, any old rope will do (what we used.)

If you've got breakdown cover use that, if not get some and then use it. Take a train there or however else you can get there. Once you've got the bike discover that you've managed to lose the keys but it's lucky you didn't leave the bike with the steering lock on. Razz

all sorted now, me dads got it insured for himself only , we had a quote of only £88. hes going to ride it home and leave the policy running untill (touch wood) i do me test then well change it into my name only. This way its fairly cheap and when he cancels it he should get some back as a refund and its insured for theft whilst in the garage.

cheers for the help Thumbs Up

You have a 14 day "cooling off" period with the insurance.

Cancel it within 14 days and I think they are obliged to refund in full, as long as you havn't made a claim.
