hi, im in dire need of new tyres and a new shock for the rs, i am so skint its unreal and was wondering if anyone can get hold of a pair or decent enough tyres for less than 100 quid. also i noticed last night my rear shock has nothing left on it and it's jumping about like a kangeroo! would this be a warranty claim as my bike is an 04 model.
cheers kieran

out of interest what size tyres.
what mileage is bike?

125s usually only have a year's manufacturers warranty- so if your bike is still less than a year old get it to the dealer/

other than that, try ebay or have the shock rebuilt.

Hi

Shock should be covered under warrenty. They are not well built shocks (not a problem when they were only £80 new from Aprilia, but they have put the prices up through the roof) and I do not think they can be rebuilt.

You will have trouble getting cheap tyres for it as those sizes are no longer that common.

All the best

Keith

hi, the bike has done 16k. god knows what size tyres they are, just been quoted 150 for the pair fitted (bridgestone bt090's
the shock cannot be re built as its non adjustable and the whole seal has gone!

the dealers are goin to try to get it done. also how come when i get my bike serviced they wont put the new piston in under warrenty! this major service is goin to cost me over 150 quid!!!

Hi

Probably about right for the tyres (and a pretty good deal if they are fitting them to the bike rather than loose wheels).

The piston is a service item essentially. Just like they will not replace the gearbox oil under warrenty when it is worn out.

By the way, a piston in its own from Aprilia is ~£120 and £30 for a gasket set, so using original Aprilia parts a service with a piston change will cost you a lot more than £150 (probably £300~£400).

All the best

Hi

Yes the Makita barrel is likely to make warrenty claims difficult, but why are you fitting one anyway?

Fitting a new piston is a gentle afternoons work when you know what you are doing. The service including fitting a new piston is likely to be about 4 hours labour at a dealer (possibly a bit less). A piston is cheaper from Rotax than from Aprilia, or you can get cheaper pattern pistons. To just replace the piston you will need a new base gasket (~£1.50) and a new power valve gasket (~£3.50, although many people reuse this gasket) and new circlips (~20p each I think).

All the best

Keith

Hi

Doing any kind of engine work like this is going to make your warrenty dodgy. They have no idea if the person working on the bike is a semi trained chimp or Rossis mechanic doing it as a favour, so they just assume the worst case scenario. Legally they are on dodgy ground but that is small conselation when you are waiting several months with no bike for it to be sorted out.

Why do you think the bottom end is on the way out? Big end bearings tend to give little warning until they start to knock when they are already wrecked. Main bearings whine when they are worn.

All the best

Keith

this sounds really wierd but i can feel it goin if you understand! its had two new bottom ends so far and one new top. its also knocking slightly, (not helped by the air to fuel mix not being right) are rs250's the same as the 125's? im looking at getting one soon as i will have passed my car test for everyday use.

Hi

Knocking is serious, and if it really is knocking then you will not have to wait long for it to go bang. Chances are that the previous rebuilds have been done badly as the bottom end normally lasts well (what can kill them with the old style main bearings was lack of use, then being used again).

Why do you want to fit a Makita barrel?

All the best

Keith

Get in contact with some RS125 superteen racers, and other RS125 cup racing organisations they will often sell off second hand tyres for next to nothing. Sometimes you can find near enough new ones people have bought and decided they dont like.

Rear shocks are a more tricky one, everyone's generally looking for one and they go betweek £40-£80.

Hi

It is cheaper, and with no real quality issues it seems. However unless your standard barrel is wrecked then there is not really any point in spending several hundred pounds buying the Makita one.

Annoying thing is that Rotax do not sell ther barrels cheaply. The barrel for the Rotax Max FR125 kart engine is virtually the same design and probably costs an identical amount to make, yet they are available from karting shops for ~£160.

All the best

Keith
