Hi,
ive got my theory tomorrow Crying or Very sad (wednesday) and shortly after that ill be doing my restricted licence. Id like a classic bike as there cheap to insure (and my dad reckons you cant be a proper biker till uve experienced an RD Very Happy Very Happy Mr. Green Thumbs Up Thumbs Up ) and the RD seams perfect. They still have a huge following and parts can still be found but what im mainly woried about is the 33bhp rule. Ive heard that the restrictors are different for every bike (quite obvious really) and im worried about not being able to find any for the RD, so can anybody tell me what the BHP is for the RD250,350 and the 250YPVS and the 350YPVS as idealy id like not to bother with the restrictors by getting a bike that either produces 33bhp or less

thanks for reading

Adam

do not restrict a RD or any other two-stroke, they just don,t like it.

buy a RD250/350 and ride it full power.

According to Used Motorcycle guide:

RD200: 20hp
RD250: 30hp
RD350: 36hp
RD400: 40hp
RD250LC: 35hp
RD350LC: 45hp
RD350YPVS: 59hp
RD500: 80hp

Be aware that there is also a power:weight restriction which may mean that something like an RD250 is also not learner legal.

Another point worth mentioning is that 'back in the day' when you could ride a 250 on L-plates, it was very common to buy an RD250 and bung a set of 350 barrels on it. Of course I would not suggest such a blatant and difficult to detect way of getting an instant 20% power increase as in any way appropriate Wink

get ain AIRCOOLED RD250 and thats under the limit naturally.

All of the 250/350 LC (liquid cooled) models are well over the limit.

It was because of the RD LC's that the 250 learner limit was scrapped and replaced with the 125cc 12.6bhp limit or whatever it is. What kids were doing is getting to 17 years old and jumping straight onto a 250LC, which were mad in their day, and still are today in fact. Many people died on them, law being broken by the riders on them etc. Think the defintion of the 'RD' is now 'Rapid Death', although the proper name for the RD is Racing Development, mainly because the LC engines are GP engines of the 80's, the frames were very skinny, and the engines quite powerful, which made them deadly. The power to weight ratio of the 250 and 350LC's is crazy. Classic bikes, I would love a 350LC of my own, but I'm settling for the baby of the family at the moment, the 125, which still, today, is a quick bike compared to todays plastic fantastic things. Great bikes, very easy to work on, and parts aren't at all short on Ebay. Get one, you won't ever get bored! Razz

The RD 250 were common as muck when I was 17. Every kid leaving school got one. slapped L plates on it and hit the road (sometimes literally) on 100 mph motorbikes without any training or experience of any kind. The death toll as staggering. Out of the gang of mates I knocked about with (about 8 lads) 3 of them killed themselves. One of them on the way back from commemorating anothers death exactly a tear to the day earlier.

Something had to be done so the 125 regulations and compulsory training were introduced.

Yep, pretty much what I said. Wink

Crazy bikes. Think the 125LC still has one of the highest death toll of riders in the UK. People just underestimate their power too much. Many may think they're old and dated, but they're still quick even by todays standards. 125LC's can give most modern 125cc 2 strokes a good go, losing out on top end by about 5-10mph though, acceleration on a full power 125LC is probably tad quicker than RS125 I heard. 350LC can beat most 400's for acceleration, lose out on top end by about 15-20mph, maybe even more. 250LC revolved around acceleration rather than top end. Would probably out accelerate a newer 250 two stroke to about 30-40? Would be nice for flatspot to chip in now with a few commments as he has a rather nice 350LC, he'll be able to tell what the performance is like on them.
