I got my favourite racing team and my initials. Was expensive, but then, it's something I'll keep for as long as I have bikes.

Remember, you can't change over a plate that was on a bike to a car.

Thought it was the other way round, cannot transfer plates from cars to bikes but can from bikes to cars.

Also thought that they had given up this sillyness.

You can't make your vehicle appear younger than it is, so you are limited there. You will be charged £80 everytime you want to change it to another vehicle, or £110 to put it on retention. It's like an extra road tax for having a big head.

DVLA -

I can get a worthwhile/pretty specific plate on my 'M' car for the basic £250 ...

Yet for my 'D' plate 'bike it'll cost me a basic £400 ... why?

I'd have bought the 'bike one by now if it had been £250 ... but £400 for a bike worth £750? That's crazy talk ...

They have. You can now swap from one to the other.

Used to be the case where you could swap from car to bike but not vice versa. It's my understanding that this is now not the case and you can swap plates too and from either vehicle without hassle.

Oh, and another vote for going direct to the DVLA is you can. I got a personal plate for my father's birthday and only cost a couple of hundred. The cheapest on-line reg company wanted over 3 times that amount.

No, sorry Keith it wasn't. Reason I know this was that I looked into it in case I wanted to put a plate from the car onto the bike. Decided against it as once it was on the bike it couldn't go back onto a car.

However, as said, irrelevant now as the rules have changed.

Had a Google and you are right. Rules changed on the 1st October 2001.

However years ago numberplate dealers used to collect cheap mopeds to get and keep the plates. Possible that the DVLA rules have been even more bizarre in the past.

They probably prefer people to pay them for putting a plate on retention for a few years rather than taking the cheaper option of putting the plate onto a cheap scooter that will never go on the road.

They are ridiculous amounts to pay for a registration. Who would spend that much on a few numbers and letters?

Mmm, when I bought my plate, for my bike, I remember the guy specifically saying "If you put it on a bike, you can't later put it on a car". Any way I check this information?

As for the prices, depends what letters and numbers are involves, A1 FAE for example will cost alot, but F111 FAE probably won't. More number/letters the cheaper, hence I got S555. Wink

Check out Kickstart's post above. Rules changed 1 Oct 2001. So now ok to go from bike to car (and vice versa).

Agree with looking for alternative if you want initials, the S555??? combination is very popular.

Hehe, the guy I bought it off (from the DVLA over the phone) probably hadn't recieved the memo about it yet. Usual DVLA antics. Razz

And it was actually one of the cheapest plates out there. £250 for the plate including everything, except the actual plastic plate. Very Happy

Because random number conbination aren't reserved for private sale like that.
