new honda cg125 wont start

hi, Im having big trouble with my honda CG125 ('54 reg). I rather stupidly didnt read the manual before starting the engine and the engine stalled out as soon as I set off, cos I hadnt allowed the engine to warm up for 30 seconds (as it sez in the manual), and the choke may have been in the wrong position.

After it stalled, I tried re-starting to no avail - the electronic start just wouldnt work at all, not even a sound. I thought I may have flooded the engine, but I followed the procedures for 'de-flooding' and i still cant get a whisper out of it.

I also cant seem to be able to get it into neutral (I keep clicking through the gears, but the neutral light wont come on), which is a minor problem considering I cant even get the thing started (with the clutch down, obviously)

Please help, Im getting rather worried that Ive spent £1500 on a faulty bike

also you should sitll be able to get it in neutral, what ya do is click all the way down till ou can't no more, then click up one, then rock the bike back and forth, if it moves freely and easily then your in neutral, if not , well your in gear so retry. I doubt you would have screwed the bike up by not letting it idle for 30 seconds mate.

Is it brand new?

You wont of damaged it by not letting it warm up once. Even if its flooded the engine will still turn over when you press the button.

Check your battery and ignition fuse. Under the seat or to the side of it. The fuse will be on the red cable not far from the + terminal of the battery. Thumbs Up

sounds like there is no power from the battery, hence starter wont go and neutral lamp needs power to light.

go through all the gears until you find one which will let you roll the bike, on a CG it will be all the way down for first then 1 up for neutral.

this will confirm that you can get neutral, this being the case as said check your battery and main fuse.

Yep, you need to get it in neutral. You may also need to hold the clutch in to be able to work the electric start.

If it has a kick-start you should be able to start it in gear by holding the clutch in as you work the kick start.

Don't worry anyway. If it is a brand new bike it is under warranty. You wont have broken it though. CG125s are used at riding schools for a very good reason, they are almost impossible to break through being used by an inexperienced rider.

Make sure it has petrol in and the tap is switched on Wink

I sold it a couple of weeks back.. probably not, but anyway..

The CG doesn't have to be in N to start it. You also don't have to hold the clutch in to get it started either.
It also doesn't have a 'kill switch' like bigger bikes.

You could have flooded it, but it should be okay now. You say you had the choke on as you rode off.. the CG is pretty funny about riding off with the choke on sometimes..mine used to make very strange sounds, so I didn't do it.

I hardly ever used to sit and warm the engine up on my CG before riding off, I did it on the road riding along...it never flooded or stalled, etc.. I just used to keep the revs constant for the first mile.

The N is very easy to find on that bike. As no light is coming on, and the bike still will not start then I am leaning towards a dead battery.

Does your headlight come on ?? (it should do as on the CG it is permamently wired on).

Is the bike from a dealer / private ? Was it sat around a lot ?
Batteries lose their abillity to hold power if they are used..sat..used..sat..

GOOD POINT from stink!..
petrol ? a lot of new bikes have tiddly amounts in.
Try flicking to reserve.
If there is NO sound at all though..this may not be the problem.

it was bought privately, the lamp comes on (so it cant be battery_, and I put some fuel in it, but Im still having problems - Ive tried clicking the clutch to the bottom + bringing it up one, but it still doesnt want to go into neutral.

The only consilation is that the bike did start initially, so Im gonna give it another go in the morning + hopefully get it sorted!

If anybody has any other thoughts as to what it could be, please let us know!

I say bump start it. That's what I always do if I can't get a bike to start. Razz

Chuck it in 1st gear and roll with the ignition on, then let the clutch out. If it doesn't go, it's broke. Thumbs Up

I was going to suggest bump starting but I was assuming pjb120 is a complete newbie. As such, trying to bump start it is a good way to drop your new bike. Quite enough to think about as it is without trying to push start the bike at the same time. (appologies pjb if you are not;) )

I would always bump start a bike in second gear by the way, much easier, you can pretty much paddle a CG125 along in second without touching the clutch.

I really doubt there is anything wrong with the bike, it is going to be something stupid like having the ignition switched to 'park' instead of 'on'. Everyone has difficulty starting a new bike until they are used to it.

If there is a kickstart, use it.

As above you should be able to get it into neutral, although with you trying to start it so many times the spark plug is probably wet so just take it out and give it a wipe/ sure your that your fuel tap is turned to ON ??
