I was just wondering why motorcycle manufacturers use letters with which to name a particular bike model. I think that sticking an 'f' on the end of a certain bike's 'name' means it's faired or something, (i.e the Suzuki GS500F) but I am interested to know if the actual letters have any meaning, or are they just... in a sense, made up?

Thanks.

The more letters there are in the name, the better bike it is. And putting an R on the end of the name makes the bike go faster but putting two R's on makes it go even faster!

It's vaguely simple.

F = Faired (i.e. GSX600F)
R = Racing (i.e. NSR125R)
RR = Race Replica (i.e. ZX6RR)

There are others floating about but these are really the only ones I see on a regular basis.

X on GSXR refers to the cylinder configuration as far as I know.

Hi

No real pattern at all. They just make it up as they go along, and each go their own paths.

For example Suzuki 4 cylinder bikes were called GS. When they brought the 4 valve versions out they were called GSX. Then the race replica came out which was the GSXR.

F randomly means faired or four.

CB as used by Honda apparenty stood for City Bike (so those with a CBR600RR are just riding a tarty commuter bike Wink ).

All the best

X means it has 4 valves per cylinder in suzukis AFAIK.

F generally denotes gentler or unfaired version - NSR125F is unfaired, GSXF600 is softer than a GSXR600.

R for race, we all know that. Doesn't make it a race bike by any stretch of the imagination, generally just means its faired - NSR125R for instance.

Also letters are often put on the end to designate year- VX800-L would be a 1991 I think, CBR600s have letters on the end and then numbers when they ran out of alphabet.

Which sometimes confuses people when they get the 'R' year cos they think they're getting some special race version.

Barely applies really. The MBX125F did not have a fully faired version, and was Hondas sportiest 125 at the time. And the it was the CBR600F for years. The GSX600F came out years before Suzuki did the GSXR600.

Suzuki definatly started out with the X denoting the 4 valve engined bikes, but with the Bandit they dropped the X (despite it using a retuned GSXR1100 engine).

Even companies who had some kind of standard changed it when they felt like it. With Kawasaki the GPz was air cooled and the GPZ was liquid cooled but they broke that idea occasionally.

Then you get to Ducati names, where the 851 was called that even when it was bored out to 888. The 904cc 906 Paso (the name Paso was either named after a 1970s raced called Renzo Pasolini, or the cafe where the engineer went for lunch depending on who you believe) was claimed to be called that as it was a 900 with a 6 speed gearbox, although the designer admitted it was just because 906 looked better than 904.

They really do make it up as they go along

All the best
