How long do you warm up your bike for?

I warmed the AR125 up for maybe 2 minutes just until it could pull away cleanly, and the GPZ500 just gets started and rode off 30 seconds to a minute later. I do not sit and let it "warm up" so to speak. I will do the first mile or two with the choke but I have never actually sat and waited for it properly.

about 20 seconds maybe with the choke out until it revvs without dying then thrash thrash away......none of my 5 two strokes have had any engine proiblems because of this so basically I think warming up is a load of cack.

Almost not atall, by I like the engine to be "stable" (i.e wont die without throttle) by the time I reach the end of my road, and will warm up accordingly each morning.

In the summer, this means I can get on and ride. In the winter this means I have to sit there playing with the choke for 30 seconds - 1 min.

I tend to try not to rev it too much in the first few miles of any journey.

Too all you GPZ500S owners, warm your engines properly!!!!

I wrecked an engine in mine by not warming it properly, and it caused major problems with the bike.

As for my bike at the moment, my GSX600F, I warm it for about 1-2 mins while I am getting my gear on. That way it warm ups properly and gets the oil circulating round its veins. Smile

When I had the RS125 I would warm it to about 55-60 before pulling away gently and running easily up to its full temp. With the CBR6 I just start up, maybe a little bit of choke if it needs it, helmet on, thrash it -Couldnt give a fook! Thumbs Up

There was an article in MCN a while back where Castrol stated that idling while warming up was the most damaging time for an engine. I used to warm up proper but now I just run it till it's fine with no choke and then I'm off.

I don't warm mine up at all. My Triumph likes it's high revs, so I presume that if I ride it at low revs until it's warm, then the bike probably won't notice much difference between standing idle to warm up, or riding at low revs to warm up. There's logic in there somewhere Rolling Eyes

Warming up whilst ticking over is tosh, it gets heat into the coolant but not into the oil.

To really get an engine and its oil warm you need to be making it do some work - the fuel its burning, the more heat its making. No need to thrash the bollocks off it, but sitting ticking over on a cold engine is a bad thing for an engine to do.

Keiths rule of half redline until its warm sounds good. Personally I just get on, start it, and ride.

bikes perform shit when there cold they splutter and are pretty sluggish through the rev range.
when u let it sit and warm up, the engine is getting warm.
but everything else is still stone cold.
so even if the engine says its at a good temp, the rest of the bike may not, therefore ride moderatly for a few mins.

Coinsidence or not the night mine blew up I didn't warm it up and thrashed it from the word go. Got new rear shoes and wheel bearing and it was a cool night so she was going brilliant, then literally 100 metres from my house saw my mate in his mini so I gave him a bit of sport. That was the end of that. Laughing

30-60 seconds? Confused Question As long as it takes me to shut the garage door, fasten my helmet and pull my gloves on ... and short-shift the gears for the first five minutes of riding Thumbs Up

It depends on the external temperature, mine is a bit tempremental when you first start it, especially if the weather is cold. It also has no temp guage or rev counter, so it's tricky to guess........ Confused

It always needs choke to start, then it revs itself silly for a bit, but if you start to put the choke back in it just dies. If you take the choke off too soon it dies when you come off the throttle and stop at junctions, which is a bit of a bugger.

So basically I start it, let it rev while I put my helmet & gloves on, ride away, then fiddle with the choke til the bike feels like idling without any choke.

till i get my lid and gloves on then take it easy till i get to a road where i can thrash it and by that time its fully warmed up

its bad for a engine to stand idling and to rev with no load

135+ degrees farenheit. 160 in winter. Failure to do so can cause detonation/knock in older bikes.
