I was reading an article the other day into optical camouflage…..and was thinking about how amazing the technology has advanced….then as usual my mind slipped to thinking about Bikes………………and idea appeared.

Here are few video clips on optical camouflage just to clue you up:

Optical 1
Optical 2

Now here’s the idea………….. Why don’t car manufactures apply this technology in the future to pillars in cars giving the driver a better view of the road & motorcyclist using it?
And hopefully the daft bastard car drivers might not pull out on us!!

Please explain how this works...

The first vid I'll almost believe.

The second I believe is camera/editing trickery!

If its for real, then it may be smart to apply it to pillars in cars. However that depends on the materials required to make this (pillars being rather vital structural components!)

Yeah, I know they've been working on this for a while but I can't believe the second video. Seems like a video made up with cheap digital effects studio software, done by college kids. Although it does look very real, you would THINK it would be a little more......professional?? Laughing

It'd be too expensive.

And the equipment to do it with (if it's what I'm thinking of) is huge.

Did they not screw up a bit when they were using the ball? It only shows up the bookcase behind, and not the persons face? Razz Laughing Laughing

the picture is been taken from behind the guys head.....so when he moves the ball with the retro-reflective material on in front of his face it appears that his head has disappeared….hence invisibilty or the illusion anyway......

It also doesnt show the persons hand thats behind the ball.
How it was done:

Man is sat in front of a green screen or a blue screen on the second one. the objects he holds up are the same colour as the back screen. a computer then replaces the green on the film with a predefined image, in this case the bookshelf.

hence why it doesnt show the guy, he is there helding the object and it's part of the image background.

It would have been more convincing if it were a recording as the background, possibly with some well timed fake interaction.

it wouldn't show a hand or a face, because the video camera used to make the active camo, is behind the person. so it would make them invisible as well

hmmm... There is a way to have the same affect on the pillars of a car, but i dont know if it can be done. You could simply place tiny digital camera's on the outside of the pillars, then sink coloured LCD display monitors into the inside of the pillar. But theres two problems, one thats very expensive and two i dont know if you can bend lcd screens or not....

Or why don't they just make the pillars out of a very strong clear/see through materail? I tell you the person that designs see through pillars by the front windscreen will make billions.

Or better still, just teach motorists to MOVE THEIR FUCKING HEADS when they know they have a blind spot.
