Right, as you know i fryed my clutch doing burnouts about a fortnight ago.

Well yesterday i set too on it. Got it all apart eventually (bastard bastard center nut) and inspected it.

Heres my question, my clutch completely stopped engaging, so i assumed the friction plates would be too the metal, and the plain plates would be fucked.

Well the friction plates were very worn yes, but not ridiculously so. Had about 0.5-1mm left on all of em. The springs were about 2mm shorter then the new ones i brought, and the sides facing into the clutch were purple... so thats probably not good.

My query is, my plain plates, had blued, but werent warped or worn. So i put them back in with new friction plates and heavy duty springs. Got it back together and went for a little toddle...

Dear god does it get down more power now. After id let it settle for 10 miles i gave the throttle a little blip in first, and it was pretty much bolt upright... even staying perfectly still and cracking it it comes up hugely now. Acceleration is better, gear changes are better. Everything is better.

So whats the crack.... was it just the springs being wasted?

(also how come, no matter whether you set your torque wrench 2nm below what the spec says, and 9/10 bolts torque up fine, one ALWAYS snaps.... Its driving me nuts)

sounds like your friction plates may have glazed, meaning they go nice and slippy, bit like pads can Smile

blueing isn't great on steel. it does mean it's been heated quite a bit, whereas blueing on cast iron isn't a prob. (why you sometimes see blued disks)

hahaha you should have seen mine after the weekend - an hour and a half after stopping, we still couldnb't hold the plates they were so hot

blue steel is not good, it gets glazed and doesn't grip as it should - as do the friction plates

the springs being shorter probably means that they have got much too hot and lost most of their mechanical properties

once they can't clamp the plates together as effectively as they used to then you are in a downward spiral I reckon
