apprilia RS50?????????????

hey guys this is my first post yey!!!

Anyway i was wondering if the apprilia RS50 was a good bike to start off with and why???

if so would it be a good idea to get it second hand or new??

It's a good bike to start off with because it's geared so when you move up to a bigger bike you're already used to using clutch and gears. It's a bad first bike because it's expensive as 50cc's go and has lots of shiney expensive fairings to damage when it gets dropped.

If you're getting one buy second hand rather than new. But you'd be better (IMO) to get an unfaired 50cc like the TS50 or DT50. It'll go just as fast (or slow...) and doesn't have lots of shiney fairings to damage.

aprilias are bloody expensive to maintain / buy parts for, something to think about when looking to buy one.

Why not get a tuono 50, the same bike, but in my opinion more stylish and has a more upright, town friendly seating position? Anyway welcome to BCF and enjoy your bike.

Tuonos are very rare though, and i don't think i've ever come across a tuono50 in real life.

They are an ok bike to start out on, they are around the same speed as other geared sports 50's, reliability from the AM6 motor is very very good, the only seizures i know of were due to fitting aftermarket parts and not having the correct setup.

Fuel consumption is ok if you leave it standard.

They crash well too, mines been down 3 times, nothing a new sticker wouldnt hide. The fairings are fairly soft and so hardly ever snap/crack unless you were going fast.

Theres not much maintainance needed with the 50's, use good oil and warm it up really. Although i know people who live round here that have them, use shitty oil from morrisons and never warm it up and have never had a problem. The engines are in a fairly low state of tune anyway.

Spares are easy to come by as the engine is used in most other geared 50's, fairings are often found on ebay along with most other things you may need should you bin it.

Handling is ok for a 50, still not a patch on a 125, but it's ok for what it is. Tyres are shite in the cold/wet but good in the warm, they take ages to warm up even when the engines putting out 2x the amount of power as a stock engine. Brakes are brilliant, 2 finger stoppies are possible if your crappy front tyre has enough grip to do them.

there a good bike to learn on if you want to go onto bigger bikes, theres no point in buying a new one youll loose too much money when you come to sell it but look around and get a decent second hand one with not too many miles on it cause there ment to have a topend rebuild at 16,000 km so if its over 16k check its had one

so can ped's be de-restricted before 17???, because i don't really like the idea of being overtaken by somone on a ped whos the same age as me!! lol (im 16 in december btw)

Right I had this problem (not being overtaken by a ped lol) but I had my heart set on an RS50, and my Dad told me I should just go with an Enduro, or lesser faired bike. I didn't want to at first but now I am on my RYZ50 and I realise that it was the better choice in the end. A first bike doesn't necessarily need to look the s hit, just get you used to riding and owning a motorcycle, getting used to clutches and suchlike. Which doesn't mean that it won't look nice I think mine looks quite nice to be honest lol. Also if you drop a none faired bike, you are not going be paying through the for repairs, maybe £100 in plastics.

So with my Motorhispania RYZ50 (derestricted) I can happily burn scootays at traffic lights, and go at around 50 mph. Trust me if you are spanking new to biking you will be better off with a enduro/crosser type, e.g. Suzuki TS50, Motorhispania RYZ50, Aprilia MX/RX50, Yamaha DT50. Although if you like them you could be ok with a Gilera DNA50.

If you going to ride a derestricted bike at 16, a rs50 would be quicker since they do 60.

dont forget that the nicer your little 50 looks, the more people will want to steal it.
dont go too mad.if word gets around that you have got a fast one you wont be able to leave it anywhere

a restricted rs50 is like gold dust mate iv just sold my rs50 tetsuya replica that was a w reg with 10 k miles i sold that for only a grand with arrows pipe , 28 mm carb , airfilter, iridium spark plug and full service history , neva droped , rs50 go really cheep secondhand ,brand new there fukin mad money 2 b honest , o and u can now get fairing protectors from a bike shop so if u do drop it u wont damage the fairing !! im 18 and had my bike license for ova a year so decided 2 move on 2 an rs250 , in september hav 2 wait 2 months untill i get my new bike so not very happy !!!!

No, you have to have a 30 mph restriction. Which personally I think is bloody dangerous.

Yeah it is dangerous when you think about it, and quite stupid too. My bike is derestricted and only goes 50 - 55 which still holds up traffic behind on hills etc. but think about a 30mph person thats just silly lol
