Proper definition of the word 'tart'?

Hi all,

This term seems to becoming used more widely now, but my conceptions of its definition is somewhat different to others.

I always thought it was something along the lines of obsessive bad taste in regard to motorcycle asthetics. (Cheap, tacky materials; fake carbon, coloured anodising, inconsistent colours used for paintwork, an over working of sticker application, etc).

What is tartiness?

Aesthetics over functionality.

Be it buying an amazingly fast bike and then riding it at 60mph to your local meet to show it off, or spending a fiver on some screen trim that has no practical use.


Obviously this can be seen in particular in those that spend a lot of money that buy lots of shiny things (the magpie effect) that aren't actually useful.

If all the work was done by yourself at a very minimal cost, then I wouldn't call it 'tartiness'. That's hard work. Tarting would be spending loads of money on bits and bobs, purely to help cosmetics.

And hey, it seems that most people into bikes want this anyway, with cheap carbon fibre nasties!!

Almost as bad as buying genuine suzuki spares at rip off prices.....*snigger*

Honestly though....£67 for 4 new original bandit indicators. That is the daftest price I have ever heard.....for anything! Shocking how much people will pay for standard bits, when imitation "big brick indicators" can be bought of r about £8 or less each! :o......

I did notice jordan doesn't have colour co-ordinated jubilee clips on his radiator hose. He STILL has some sense!!!

I will purchase an origional but I know as soon as I fit it I will snap another one so will probably leave it untill I want to sell it.

What is more tarty than colour coded bar ends, mirrors, hugger, engine bars, scottoiler duel injector, radiator hoses, wheels, seat, tyres and oil filter.

Bandit ones cost £25 each from a suzuki dealer.

I'd say a 'tart' is something thats made up to look 'nice' to the owner but others find rather OTT.

Think Kat Slater from 'enders. Not bad looking but when she puts on a bit of slap and her choice of clothes and it just shouts TART.

Now apply that thinking to a bike and/or the rider and you've got it
