Well if the US is getting them, then I guess we can't be far behind.

You can this being a popular replacement for 2T 50CC peds in the not too distant future. Only problem i can see is that it's near silent - which means cagers have less change of seeing/hearing/noticing your there...

..and we all like to get a little audio flavour when riding out bikes don't we? Maybe they'd put engine noises on an onboard CD?

I should bloody hope this crashes and burns like all the rest of these inventions.
Imagine riding something that resembles a futuristic Dawes shopper with a Ducati sound track.
No thanks.

I disagree. Don't you think that if we can develop a technology that's cheaper to run than petrol engines, less damaging to the environment, and removes the absolute need for expensive oil, it'll be a good thing?

Perhaps this particular bike will be a bit crap, but then the first ever cars had a top speed of 4mph!

It's a start, and may end up with us having spotsbikes powered by these fuel cells, that'll outperform anything we use today.

People should be more open-minded in my opinion.

Luddite. Razz

These were at Loughborough uni a few months ago, but stupidly I didn't go and have a look at them. They're very interesting things, but I don't think they'd appeal to most motorcyclists. I was also under the impression that most fuel cells were really rather expensive.

I'm sure its made in the UK.

But consider this , the bike weighs 80kilos wet , a sports bike wet is around 190kilo mark (no matter what they claim) which means they have 100 kilos to play around with it to modify it so that rather than performance that makes a CG125 owner smirk it has many possibilities say increasing power / range etc.

Of that probably 30-40kilos is the engine , and just as a rough comparisom you could double or triple it up , much like they do with cylinders or just do the eqivilant of using a bore kit , ie you get some 650CC single cylinder BMWs these days.

You can do alot of modding with 100kilos , and heck I'm used to a 220kilo bike.

Has already been done, only very a very poor attempt. Sinclair C5 springs to mind. With modern technology advancing at the rate it is doing tho, I'd have thought they could come up with a pretty impressive machine if manufacturers are willing to put some money into it. With brushless motors becoming more common I'm sure there could be some serious performance avaliable too.

As for the audio CD to make it sound as if it's making a conventional moped soundtrack, theres a few boyracers I have heard with the same idea. Instead of spending some money on their Novas, they bang a soundtrack of a nissan Skyline in their CD player, lol! anyone else ever come across this?

I doubt that these are intended as viable replacements for large motorbikes at the moment, but rather as a replacement for scooters, mopeds and small engined motorbikes.

If you had a choice between one of these or a scooter / moped, which would you choose ? I know which one I would.

I think the idea could work but it need good marketing and support from local councils/city government to make it a success.

Just think about it the ups for any over congested city’s are easy to see and if there as cheep to run as said then the commuting public will soon pick up the idea.

With a few perks like 0% finance available from employers and the government in the same way as the current annual ticket schemes a lot of people could see it as the way to beet the spiralling cost of getting to work.

As for the technology it will improve year on year as soon as it comes into regular uses and will become more a likely it or similar technology will start replacing the power plants of vehicles currently on the road today rather than fill the commuter market it is set for now.

Similar to my idea that was rubbished, just not using a fuel cell.
Use a small engine (a 250 single for example) to generate the electricity with the battery there to boost power if required.
It means the engine will always run at peak efficiency (unless you're gunning it in which case the revs will rise) so will potentially be better for fuel consumption than using a conventional bike with the same output power.

Yeah but it costs an estimated 5.5K , for 5.5K you can buy alot of bike for that , you can get a new SV650 , a new NT650V , a good second hand pan , a good second hand 600CC sports for just a grand or two more you can get a new GSX-1000 , which buck for buck is more worth it me thinks

I absolutely agree you can get a hell of a lot of bike for that money.

That’s why the government and employers need to get involved if through your work you could replace your £100+ rail ticket with a £50 or less payment for what is in effect fleet vehicle serviced by the company you could get a good take up.

The way I look at it is if a company was to pay the capital cost of the bikes or lese them from the manufacture and then let there employees run them for what would be a fraction of the cost of public transport it would go a long way to help the problems of congestion pollution and overcrowding on public transport.

The government could offer tax incentives to the companies to make it attractive to take up and every ones a winner.

Ok summer in London or any other big town in the UK can make the idea of the bike attractive but in the middle of winter it’s just not quite as attractive. But take some of the USA city’s with lots of sunshine and the eco-hippies coming out of the woodwork and you could do well.

It’s not like the C5 that was completely new idea of transport with it safety problems it just a different way of powering a bike.
