Guilt ridden...

8.40 last night I decided that the TV wasn't offering much, I'd tinkered enough in the garage and might as well go for an hour spin. I wish I hadn't.

Not because I came off, not because anything happened to the bike, just because when I got back I realised that for the hour I was out I had acted totally irresponsibly and felt guilty about it.

I overtook when I shouldn't have done, in residential areas I rode too fast. I raced Saxo's, a Cavalier SRi, a BMW and Mini Cooper S (for the record they're pretty quick off the mark!) all of which were despatched with ease and all of which tried to chase me down. I filtered too quickly, got the front wheel up away from traffic lights numerous times and generally made a complete nuisance of myself disregarding other road users in my haste to make progress to absoloutely nowhere. I sped over roundabouts taking (imaginary) racing lines, chased other bikers down dual carriageway's, went into corners too fast, came out of corners too fast, got the back end to kick out and generally acted like the sort of pratt that I despise when I see others behaving in the way I did.

Worst of all I don't know why I did it. I didn't go out with the intention of behaving like a twat, I thought it would be nice to just have a ride - it just happened.

The only explanation I can give is that I feel (although it probably isn't true) that I've reached the limits of what I can do (safely) with the bike on the road and that it has far more to offer in terms of speed, fun and exhilaration - I really think it's time that I did a track day to enable me to do these type of things in a (relatively) controlled environment.

I was glad to get the bike locked away in the Garage last night, a feeling that I've never really experienced before.

Trackdays were great for that sort of riding on the road, because you realise that there's no way you'll ever get near what you do on track, on the road, so there doesn't seem so much point in being quite such a twat .
Go book one now .
Still, I'm willing to bet that you still rode relatively safely compared to many people out there, that do that everyday .

Ha, I'm sure everyone does it...

I was thinking the same coming down Loch Lomond on saturday after spending the night up north. Rode like an arsehole weaving in and out, doing some daft over taking and generally speeding like a nut!! I thought I was going quick till I was overtaken by Banditshigh (on this forum) so I wasn't the only one being a pest to road users....

I think everyone at some point rides like that and doesn't know why?

heheh, familiar story mate. I nearly wiped myself out last night into an on coming car. Was approaching a fiat punto doing about 45mph on a clear A-road with a very slight left hand bend coming up. I moved to overtake when some guy in a Beemer came scorching towards me head-on. With my NSR125 not having the power to pull the skin off a rice pudding I thought "ooooh, shit!", but it was too late to start braking so I only had one option. Just managed to squeeze in between the two cars and was probably a millisecond away from being another statistic.

There were lots of bikers out last night, most of which were doing the same thing - just thrashing around pointlessly due to the nice weather here. A Yellow and black MV Augusta came steaming through the middle of me and a car down the bypass, only to shit himself when he realised the roandabout we were approaching isn't actually round! He was probably doing over 60mph when he hit it and ended up over shooting and going really wide.You could tell he was bricking it, lol.

All in the name of fun eh!

I used to drive like that before i got my points. Now i have calmed down and stick to 30/40's etc, still wheelie ALL the time too. They are getting so much more controlled. Pillion or not the front is gonna come up is my motto.

Why is it when you got two wheels you just gotta be on one. . now i got a big bike still getting used to it and sometimes the front end comes up and i dont mean it too.

lol about wheelies, yesterday while waiting at red lights on a crossroads some 'yoof' in a barryboyed corsa pulled up next to me revving his engine. there was a guy to my left sat on a bench with his dog. As soon as the lights turned amber I revved the nsr to about 9k and raped the clutch. Up came the front end (or beit only a few inches off the ground,hehe), the corsa was left standing and the bloke on the bench was nearly pulled off the bench by his dog barking at me! T'was a very amusing sight, lol.

My TT6 encourages that sort of riding from me a lot more than the Daytona did. The Daytona was somehow more serious, more likely to bite me I guess.

With the TT I regularly have a ride and then think "OMG I was riding like an arse!" But then I think "But it was fun".

The thing about it is, The only thing you mentioned there that seemed even slightly dangerous was speeding in a residential area.

I am happy to accelerate and brake hard, even in town - I would not consider myself to 'race' cars or bikes off of the lights, but the whole point about having a bike with good acceleration, braking and handling is to at least try and use it IMO.

Everyone needs to ride like an arse occasionally!

Thanks for the replies Guys (and maybe Gals - it's an Internet forum so I haven't got a bloody clue sometimes ),

I'm still feeling a bit circumspect about the whole affair. It wasn't that in some places I rode like a Nobber, I just had an hour of blinkered mayhem where I was kinda looking for stupid things to do which isn't like me at all. It wasn't motivated by stress or anything like that, just plain stupidity.

I'm fairly laid back and most things just wash over me but I just can't let the idiocy of my actions disappear. I did stay fairly central so I suppose other traffic user's did play their part but it's no excuse - still I'm out for a spin in the Cotswolds tonight with a friend so hopefully I'll be able to just stick behind him, relax and enjoy myself

I had another cool incident today, was coming back from the garage after buying some beverages. I saw a woman stopped with a push chair and 2 kids. She looked about 50, had grey curly hair and glasses. I shit you not she gave me the wheelie sign. Both hands pushing into the air. Couldn't believe it, slipped it into first and wheelied out 1st gear.

ill admit i do find it quite hard to stay at 30 mph all the time, i just cant do it, built up areas are fine but main roads, its just not happening for some reason, i tend to give it handfulls werever its safe, and hard braking is sometimes fun (controled) dont normally overtake in silly manners, but have been known to play with joyboys.

Sped through the forest, overtook into blind corners etc.

Felt real bad after I cut a bloke up trying to get out the way of oncoming traffic. Cooled down a bit after that.

Im normally fairly sensible but not cautious. I stick close to speed limits but dont really slow down for bends.

Yesterday I was riding with a bunch of hooligans a friend knows. I kept up with them just to prove I could, when it would have been more sensible to ride safely. I think overtaking to maintain high speeds is probably the most dangerous thing.

It turns out my friend had been more sensible and not bothered to keep up.

The effect stayed with me and today my car driving instructor lost my rag with me as I wasnt driving like an old granny as I need to do to pass my test.
