WHY POTHOLES ARE GOOD FOR BATH

BY BEN MURCH

11:00 - 25 July 2005
Forget speed bumps and expensive traffic calming measures - leaving Bath's roads to crumble could be the best way to slow drivers and prevent accidents. That is according to Cllr Andy Furse (Lib Dem, Kingsmead), who came up with the idea after noticing drivers speeding along the newly resurfaced roads at North Parade and James Street West.

He believes that potholes in busy roads are a cheaper and more effective solution to the problem of speeding motorists than the standard method of putting in speed humps, chevrons and electronic slow-down signs, all of which cost thousands of pounds.

He said: "When people are confronted by less well-maintained road surfaces with potholes, they tend to drive slower.

"They are worried about doing damage to their car and, as such, are far more careful. They also become more aware of the pedestrians and hazards around them.

"And taxpayers would make significant savings, first because less would be spent on road surfaces, and second because less would be spent on road-calming measures such as speed cameras and road humps.

"At the moment, the system is slightly ridiculous. Taxpayers cough up once for the maintenance of the roads, then again to slow down the traffic on those roads.

"Of course, we would have to be clever about this. We couldn't have potholes in bus lanes, or put cyclists at risk.

"But in principle, I believe the idea would work, not just for Bath, but for cities up and down the country."

He said the narrow streets of a city such as Bath were not designed to take cars and many cities across the country would benefit if their centres were free of cars altogether.

But his assertion that shoddy roads are a good thing for Bath has shocked some of his fellow councillors.

Cllr Sir Elgar Jenkins (Con, Bathwick), the council's executive member for transport and highways, said: "It's totally unacceptable, as any cyclist or person on a two-wheeled vehicle would tell you. It's absolutely bonkers.

"Our insurers would say it is not a thing we could do. If somebody falls into a pothole on a two-wheeled vehicle, on a bicycle or while walking, then they would expect the council to pay up on its insurance.

"It doesn't stand up. I assumed at first it was a joke, but if Cllr Furse is considering pursuing it, he needs to ask himself exactly what he is doing."

Critics also say that if roads are left to deteriorate, the eventual cost of repairing them will be much higher, so it will not save money in the long run.

Cllr Furse is not the first to come up with a novel solution to the city's traffic problems.

Last year people living on Old Fosse Road in Odd Down parked their cars along each side of the narrow lane to create an ad-hoc chicane and slow traffic down.

Residents had previously parked on just one side of the road, which left a clear route for drivers travelling between Rush Hill and Wellsway.

All the best

Keith

Genious! You know I can't for the life of me figure out why we built all these roads in the first place! Lets go back to dirt tracks, they're even slower.

Just need to get more people to claim for damage to tyres, suspension etc.. those potholes will soon be dealt with.

We had a police car have a couple of tyres ripped off due to a ditch on the roadside, it was soon filled in.

Shocked Sheffield is the pits. Mossborough is ridiculous, and WTF are they trying to do with the road past the station?! Confused The roads to the west of Chesterfield towards Matlock, Macclesfield etc are excellent for the most part though. Thumbs Up
