Hi, i need to pick the brains of the BCF database, i have found a Kawasaki KR1 for £1000 its F reg and has done 20k miles, it has a ignition pick up problem but the guy at the shop said they would have this fixed for me, it needs some TLC but its mainly cosmetics basically needs a good polish,he also said that if i trade mine in he would knock £50 off the restictors so they would only cost me £100., he's offerd me a trade in for £500 for my AR125 which has only done 6k miles and had a new set of tyres and is in above average condition,
Can anyone tell me anything about the KR1 (its not the KR1S) anything to look out for/test, also i think ill get £700 for my AR so should i tell him to go fourth and multiply or should i accept his offer
cheers

Its overpriced for a start. I had a KR1 12 years ago, and paid £1400 for it from a dealer in v.good nick, ended up selling it a year later for £1000 (11 years ago!).
The KR1 has ugly exhausts, but pretty much the same engine as the 'S', and bodywork is also the same. I put the KR1-S pipes on mine and it made a bit of a difference in power. They are pretty fast bikes, but to be honest, you'd be better off spending your £1000 on an RGV. They look better, handle better and are just as quick.
Just my worth. |

From the now defunked Used Motorcycle Guide (UMG) | Quote: | KAWA KR1/S
1989-92, 250cc w/c t/s twin,
60hp, 130mph, 35mpg, 285lbs
Pay special attention to the back end, including rear wheel bearings which sometimes break up. Most were thrashed, some seized up after 15k, others did twice that. Vary between bikes about to blow up (as much from amateur tuning efforts as fast wearing components) and the odd good ’un. |
Based on that unless you're a 2-stroke junkie I'd walk away and get some newer kit. Still, your choice

piston change every 10,000 miles
re-plating of cylinders every 25,000 miles (if it lasts that long)
the worst problem they face are leaking crank seals which is a massive job to re-place (look out for gear oil buring on one of the exhausts while runing
35mpg
parts are piss easy to get and are cheap
faring is very hard to get with good condition fairing reaching silly prices on ebay
the KR-1S is more powerful that the KR1 by 5bhp due to a re-design of the exhausts, KR1 faring/ cylinders/ wheels/ cdi/ are different from the KR-1S
fastest 250cc 2 stroke available and will piss on rs250,s in the straights
try and get a steering damper and mounting bracket if you buy one as they are prone to tank slappers in wide bends.
a RGV rear wheel can be fitted with a spacer so a wider choice of tyres can be fitted
can’t remember which model of the ZXR400 it is but there up-side down forks can be fitted to the KR-1S to improve handling.
sold my 1992 KR-1S (C3 "last model of the KR-1S") for £1500 a few months ago but she was mint and had only covered 12,000 miles
the most rarest of the KR series of bikes are the KR-1R which only a few were produced for racing for the UK most were sold in japan and the first KR,s which were the KR250 (A1) know as the "tandum twin" very very rare now ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV

I got rid of my KR1 with 35,000 miles on it, all it had was oil changes and plugs. Was running fine, no problems at all. Got it with 12,000 miles on.
