Hi

I think my bike's oil is a little low, can I just top up the oil via the oil cap or do I need to drain the bike of all of its remaining oil and then fill it up? Also, what sort of oil should I buy, its a 4 Stroke Kawasaki EN500. Sorry for sounding stupid but I just don't want to do something wrong. The reason i want to top up the oil is that I have a 70 mile journey to do tonight.

Cheers
Jack

If you know whats in it currently, it's probably worth using the same, or at least something simerlar. Afaik any 10w40 semi synth should be ok.

Might be wrong though.

Does it have to be the same make of oil? or just the same type?

In order of preference:

Same make and grade (eg castrol GP 10W-40)

Same grade and type (eg any semi-synth 10w-40)

Same grade, different type (eg any 10w-40)

Different grade, same type (eg mixing 10w-40 and 20w-50 semi-synth)

All are preferable to low oil.

This is another reason I always used to use Castrol GTX in my bikes, you can buy it anywhere. (I use Motoul nowadays because I get free filters with it)

Might be obvious (but wasn't to me!) - make sure it's on the centre stand or at least upright when you check it.

Hi,

How do I check oil on a CG125 2001? Do you run the engine for a bit first or do you do it from cold?

Toby

Mines only got a side stand, Dam cruisers!!

I know it is low, I have to tilt it right over to get even the slightest in the sight glass.

Bought some now anyway... Silkolene Semi Synthetic Super 4 10W-40

Kaw's are VERY finicky about oil levels, keep it to about 3-4mm from the top of the glass if you don't want it to go bang.

Have someone sit on it so it's level when ya check it..

Hi Jimster

From what I understand with the CG run it for about a minute or two stop and give it a few minutes then check oil. I could be wrong and some techie will come and bitch slap me, but thats how I do it.

Just sold my CG today Very Happy had a last ride this morning (well didn't want it stalling on test ride did I) forgotten just how chuckable it is and it makes a better sound than my hornet.

Erm...wtf?? Laughing Laughing

That's not me! My sig says: 2000 CG125 on a V-plate with 25k miles, his says: 2001 Y-plate with 4k miles (and our bikes don't even LOOK the same)

plus I'm a different person to him

plus I'm not called Toby, I'm called James

plus I'm working in Washington DC until September 28, and about 3500 miles from my CG which is in storage in Exeter and therefore I'm unlikely to be able to change the oil in the near future...!!

I'm very confused.
