Howdy!

Knowing nothing about the cost of repairing the paintwork on my bike, I thought I'd ask if anyone else thinks what I've been quoted is a bit, eh, high!??

Had a small slide along the road a few weeks ago and after replacing all the broken parts, today I finally got round to getting some quotes to get the the paintwork sorted. Now being in Glasgow there are almost no bike painters, so I went to the only one in the yellow pages.

When I got there this bloke, the painter, and his boss told me they weren't sure what type of paint my bike had, something to do with how it's painted at the factory. He said it could be either just normal base and the colour on top of it or something to do with it being layered, I'm not sure, he was rabbiting on a bit but he said one was the cheaper to repair and the other more expense. So they both disappear to find out what paint coat my bike has and the painter bloke appears with a razor blade, scrapes some paint off and guess what he finds........mines has the expensive paint!!(Funny, I thought he would say that Twisted Evil ). Now for the best bit, he said it would take a week cause he would need to paint the whole fairing, also meaning I'd loose the SV650S stickers, oh and it would be £225.............WTF, £225!!!!! Shocked And to make matters worse he said that would be for cash, so he could dodge the VAT!

The picture below is what I'm talking about(sorry about the dodgy picture, it's from a camera phone). The paint has been scrapped away and the surface is a bit ruff on the leading edge of the fairing, but that's it!!

Sorry about the long post but is this bloke taking the piss or are the plastics on bikes difficult and expensive to repair??

Ta!

Are you looking for perfection? if not you could probably do it yourself, if you want it done professionaly you could get it done cheaper, plus the VAT dodge sounds like hes a bit of a 'iffy' character.

Sorry but it sounds about right for a metallic blue mint finish.

Even with no stickers.

For a matt finish it would be about half the price if that.

Doing it myself would provide disastrous results!!

So what's so expensive about repairing plastics on bikes??

I've had allot more paintwork done to cars and it hasn't cost this much.

tis true, we have a blue k3. the paint is really weird, its actually a green basecoat with a blue ink sprayed into it. it is quite hard to spray, and works out expensive. we found it cheaper to buy new panels direct from suzuki. gte a quote from yoyur local dealer.

Yeah, the bloke at the painters said my bike is painted silver first then more coats of blue are added, or something along those lines!

I guess those SMART repair people couldn't paint it then??

Just consider yourself lucky it isn't a candy red Z-series kawasaki. They have something stupid like a six coat finish. Costs up to a grand to do a full respray on a candy red Z1300 (without badges)

For a wierd finish on a full respray, I wouldn't consider two hundred and odd quid out of the ordinary. If it is WORTH that is another matter entirely.

Can you not just T-cut the worst of it out?

You'd probably be better off looking out for new plastics on ebay or at breakers if you were going to actually spend that ammount...

Maybe wait a while and spend a bit more changeing the entire colour scheme (purple, yellow? ooooh the choices!)

Do you actually need to get the paint work sorted now?

Sure it will look like it's not been crashed, but unless you're selling it, does that matter?

Presumably the bike still runs fine with your current paint and does all that it would do if you spent a load of money sorting it Smile.

GlasgowSV650S,
I put some road rash on the side of my T'cat. I bodged it up myself, carefully, but it still looked like I'd bodged it up myself.

Local custom spray specialist told me he'd do it for me but he would do the whole bike more or less. £350-450.

His reason, valid I think, is that people pay much more attention to bike finish than cars so imperfection is easy to spot.

I traded the bike for a new bike so it didn't matter in the end.

If you're happy to use the bike with a 'cheap and cheerful' protective coating, go for it but if you love perfection then a discount deal will bug you later.

You need to trust the guy doing the job and see some of his his previous work. And decide from that. Your call!

Good luck

Hi

Entirely possible that is a fair cost. Not only difficult to spray, but it will also need to match the existing colour on the tank quite closely (not that easy).

Might well be cheaper to buy a new panel. Or just respray the complete bike!

I was chatting to the guy I use for resprays and his comment was that the ZZR600 was a pain on the early colour ones. Paint alone costs him well over £200 for a respray.

All the best

Keith

Some good stuff there people. Thanks for that.

I couldn't T-Cut it out Stinkwheel. It's difficult to see from the picture but the edge is really rought with lots of little grooves as a result of it sliding down the road. So it wouldn need smoothed out before painting.

The reason I need it done is I'll be selling the bike in about a month. So it would be nice to have it in as good a condition as possible. And the bike runs perfect G, all the bits I've broker have been replaced and it's just the paintwork and a few big scrapes on the can that tell you it's been on it's side.

i used a guy who was from just outside paisley to plastic weld and repaint my fairing and nose on the zx6 after an off
did a mint job and charged around the 300 mark which if i remember correct was about the going rate.
that was a couple of years ago and im afraid ive lost his number but his name was ewan and he used to do jobs for some of the bike shops through your way.
i'd ask in some of the shops, see if they'll put you onto him.
the other option is bikepaints up in fife who used to do the paint job for the monstermob team.
whichever you use i think theyll do a decent job at a reasonable price.
(although dont be surprised if the price youve already been quoted is about the going rate)

Might be woth considering trying to sell it as is.

You tell the prospective buyer "I'll knock a couple of hundred off what I was asking because of this" and you may get a sale.
That way you end up without all the hassle etc and the other person happy because they got a 'bargain'.

You can always sort the problems out if no one bites Smile.

Surely not if I'm selling it? Judging by what the place wanted for to respray the fairing, that would come to about £800! Shocked

Is the bloke your talking about a guy called Ewan Haldane, from Greenock?? I've seen his name and number on the MAG site and in the yellow pages but they had him down as a mechanic not a painter. I'll try him on Monday lurker, Thumbs Up

All the bike shops in and around Glasgow gave me either a place in Cupar (too far away) or some of them simply didn't know anyone!

Potential business opportunity????? Very Happy
