Watch out for brakes

Hi

Helen came round with her CBR400 this afternoon. Had a bit of a look over it. Few things need sorting (down pipes, although D&K do replacements for £175 / £210 +vat for mild steel / stainless steel).

However found a serious issue with the brakes:-

So for those who fancy tarty anodised alloy fittings on your brakes, think again.

Hmmmm, my Braided hose banjo's are corroding quite nicely at the moment too.

If they are anodised alloy ones (ie, blue or pink things) then just throw them away and put new ones on.

The alloy ones will fail.

Nah, there standard stainless looking ones with a hell of alot of rust on them.

Is helen replacing them then? Whats wrong with the downpipes if they need replacing? (holes?)

Yes, those hoses need replacing. Put it this way, we gave her a lift home rather than riding with the brakes in that state.

Down pipes have a fair few small holes. Some might be repairable but not all due to the position between the pipes.

Hmmmm, I'm certainly glad I asked Keith to take a look at her now , didn't fancy the idea of having the brakes fail on me!

In my defence, they were on the bike when I bought it .
Initially I only took her round because she wasn't running quite right - misfiring & couldn't work out why?! *sigh*

DK do the downpipes for £199 in s/s. Think the mild steel ones are £165.

I know the s/s do not have the bottleneck in them like the standard system does, not sure on the mild steel. S/s look cooler too.

Can I just replace the fittings rather than the whole lines?

(mine are only a few months old so not corroded at all.)

depends what lines you have i beleive.

goodrich g-lines are a good one to get nowdays. come with a swivel fitting which you tighten up to avoid any kinks. and much neater

Zinc plated ones will be fine. It is just the alloy ones that are dodgy. Part of the problem with the alloy ones is that the anodising is there to prevent corrosion, and when you assemble them the braiding scratches the anodising away and allows them to start to corrode.

Aren't alloy ones really only designed for racing where they get used for about 200 miles in perfect conditions?
