Abit of advice needed.

Hi all , im stuck , i cant decide on a 250 2stroke or a 400 4stroke,

I will be traveling to and from work everyday only a 7 mins trip, on weekend i will be going out for rides having fun *Etc*

Also i would like to take pillions quite often , are 250's any good for taking pillions?
I know 400's have more torque so would be easier to carry a pillion.

My situation is , if i get a 2stroke 250 i would get an rgv 250 as i would be able to keep my rs125 , if i get a 400 4t id have to sell or part ex my rs 125 .

Im thinking maybe i could get a 250 and if i dont like it i can sell it on then trade in the rs to fund for a 400?

if you need any sort of practicality at all...

I'd go for the four stroke. 2 stroke 250's in my experience are poor for pillions and they eat two stroke oil like crazy.

The RGV in particular is also not known for its reliability or fuel economy.

What I would do, is if I wanted a 'fun' bike and a commuter bike, I'd buy a cheap CB1 400 or other naked 400 and keep the RS125 for playing.

However in your situation I would hazard a guess that the 400 four stroke would be a better option.

Just get a 4 stroke. Doesn't matter what size the engine is - mine's only a 250 - just get one.

2 Strokes just ain't worth all the hassle

Im with Bendy, sounds like you know a 400 will do what you want, wont require warming up so much, and will be less likely to explode (lack of exploding is a quality often looked for in commuter bikes ).

It winds me up when people write off 250cc strokers.

I owned an RS250 for two years and commuted, went out for blasts, toured and took a pillion.


Never one problem.

Most fun I ever had on two wheels. So to anyone who says you can't do..... on a stroker, bollocks, you're just not trying hard enough

I'm not writing off strokers, but as a relatively inexperienced rider and no doubt mechanic, I would advise anyone coming from a 125 to go for a more practical machine.

I own a TZR250, but I would not wish to own it as my only machine. It needs more TLC than the more robust four stroke machines and is not ideally suited to take pillions. It barely pulls away with 9st me on it, let alone with another person as well!

However, I would never ever write them off, particularly as fun bikes. I would say that for short blasts on twisty roads you can't beat a 250 2 stroke. Shame they have stopped making them really.

Even so, this guy asked for advice, and my advice remains in favour of a four stroke 400.

Ive come to a decision, im going to get a 4stroke most likely a zxr or whatever i see for a cheapish price , then in summer next year most likely get another 2stroke

Hi

4 strokes need warming up as well. Less likely to go bang instantly, but more prone to wear to some parts of the engines. Bye bye cams and the like.

Indeed for a short journies a 2 stroke would often have been recommended, but that is going back more towards the RD350ypvs. Only seems to be since barrels became particularly like a swiss cheese with massive ports that they can no longer cope with being given a bit of stick from cold.
