That's an accelerometer, it records how fast you accelerate in all directions. If you bin it on a corner and your bike slides, you'll get a steady decline in the rate of acceleration, whereas if a car gives you a good old whack from behind at some lights, there's going to be some awful funny shaped spikes on the graph that it produces. From the acceleration, and the time taken, the velocity at any point during the crash can be calculated, however, the memory of the black boxes is only small - about 5 mins or so.

ive always wondered about a diagnostic computer thingy, seen the type for a car.
put in on ride round for a week then download and it will show you best 0-60 times top speeds de-acceration etc etc.
that stuff is cool ____________________ Ducati 1299 Panigale

There's a vast difference between an accelerometer (which is basically a crash recorder) and a diagnostics computer. The diagnostics computer will have a large memory and record everything it can (fuel consumption, g-force, acceleration, speed, shock etc...) however, they require sensors to be planted everywhere on the bike, the accelerometer is basically a little hard-as-nails black box that gives you a nice graph showing how fast you were going when you binned it.
