my dad suprised me today with the announcement that i am to help him build a brick shed in space of the one i keep my bike in at the moment. Its going to be wider and longer (basically a garage but declared as a shed!)

when i protested as to where my bike is going to go, he just said, obvious, in the new shed next to mine!

Shocked

hes decided that hes after a nice cruiser to go touring on, something like a virago 535, kawasaki v classic or something like, he'd like a harley but cant afford!!!!

hes going to book his test soon and go for it.

What advice can i pass on except remembering that these machines are vastly different to the RD250 he had years ago??

i dont want him to jump on and think hes the born again god of the road, people get killed with that mind set!!!

im thinking of offering to get riding together so he can get back up to speed with the roads now?

im just Shocked at the moment

A virago 535 or similar won't kill him.

I assume he drives a car.

He'll be fine.

Count yourself lucky and get some rides in with the old man. Cool

Wish my pa would ride with me.

i think i cruiser is what he wants, him and my mum go camping a lot and met a guy with his wife touring on a drag star 600, going all the way up the eat coast.

my dad liked the idea and its kick started his desire to get riding again, just hope he knows it aint all sunglasses and denim n e more!!!

My Dad is flogging his 650 Dragstar. It is not as good a bike as the viragos were but is newer and looks more flash.

It only makes 10hp more than an RD250, weighs a hell of a lot more and has no power band.

I persuaded my Dad to get it because he was going to kill himself on the KH350 triple he had bought.

ye, dont want him jumping into bikes again, take it steady, hes now said to me about sharing my 125, insuring it as his and naming me as driver so he can get full comp for like 100 nik!

use mine when im not (it will sill be my only mode of transport) and then after a few months, moving onto what will be a second bike for him!

hmmm, dont fancy not owning the bike, but see how it goes.

cx650 custom? Razz (shaft drive, cheap, reliable and almost as comfy as a goldwing, the GL650 is even more so)

I'd like it if my dad would get himself a bike too, he rode them from 14year old till he got to 50, then got rid..

The DAS would be enough of a refresher course, if hes not up for doing that allot of schools he could do a day and see where he needs to improve e.t.c. maybe a bit of rospa rideing..

well i think hes going to go get his CBT on a scooter, then practice on mine (hes took it out for a ride before so isnt too rusty with cogs, and all he had to say about it is how my modern 125 felt so much better than his mates top of the range 750 years ago)

then go for the DAS and llok for a bike during the winter.

I wouldn't say the Virago is a touring bike (thinking of luggage carrying) but it's comfortable and you could pootle along all day 60 to 80mph ish. As mentioned for touring a shaft drive helps, he could consider an old Kawasaki GT550 or 750. These often come with fairing and panniers so can get touring straight away.

If he's set on a 535 I know someone who may be getting rid of their's soon (moving up to a bigger bike). PM me if interested Thumbs Up

when he does his cbt mate does he know he can take it on a geared 125 instead of a scooter? would make much more seense to do it on that, a whole days riding on gears that way - good practice for the das.

i guess he just wants his cbt licence to go smoothly and then practice on my geared bike the way i have done.

A scooter should make the test go really smoothly and he shouldnt get panicked over the gears.

A lot of my 125 riding mates have dine it the sdmae way, pass the cbt on a ped (easy!) buy a 125 at 17 and learn in own time.

How about a honda shadow? I luuurv these things always fancied one, you can get them in quite a few different engine sizes I think.

this is a 750, when loaded up with camping stuff I can't see it being too powerful for him:

if it's going be used for alot of camping if he get's some sideboxes/panniers (not leather bags) and cunningly positions them on the bike in such a way like I have on my bike (see my sig) you can lay a big rucksack + tent over the top of them with plenty of room left, strap them down then get a rear box to go behind them like on that shadow. Plus a tankbag and even a little bag on the front of the handlebars. Just something for you to look into.

I thought that if you passed your CBT on a bike without gears (scooter) then you could only ride a scooter with that licence and if you wanted to ride a bike with gears, you had to take your CBT on a bike with gears?

Nope. I thought that originally, but it doesn't matter. A CBT taken on any 2 wheeler allows you to ride anything up to 125, gears or no gears.

If the 'ole fossil is going for a cruiser as you say it means he is not after speed, I wouldnt touch a Hog on the grounds of the things breaking down all the time, parts arnt cheap either.
As for what advice I think you'll find it will all come back as he used to ride before, roads are still black, white lines are still white and idiots on the road are still idiots, I stopped riding for 6 six years and I just fell into it as if I had never stopped, I dont believe nor support the term "Born again bikers" as it is segregating. Good idea on riding together, this way you'll both keep to safe speeds as its a natural reaction, I hope it all turns out well and see you all at the Kills spills 10th September[/b]
