Exactly the same for me. In the fast lane (I always sit there) it is unusual that people will be holding you up at 70/80 so I rarely have do that kind of higher speed filtering.

I'm super-paranoid about someone changing lanes into me, so 30mph is the absolute max I'll go to, even on a motorway.

Never filter at anything over 20mph really, although it depends on the width of the lanes and how much room you have between your barends and the wing mirrors.

As far as I'm concerned all it takes is for a driver to suddenly decide to change lanes, or clip a mirror and you're on your arse. It is well known that many riders get run over while filtering simply because they tend to ge skidding down the road under other traffic. Drivers won't even know you are there.

Filtering at 50mph+ is just twattish behaviour. You should be putting that deposit down for that coffin sooner rather than later.

Usually at around 15-20 mph. I will stop filtering at about 30mph...

im pretty careful and never liked filtering but am doin it more and more, inner london traffics a joke

even where i am you cant go 5 miles without hitting 4 speedcams and 14 traffic lights so theres queues everywhere but i like to keep the speed down and if traffics moving i dont tend to bother too much

when me and claud were comin home from uni doin 90-120 we had a guy undertake us at god knos what speed totally pointless

It might be, I'm not sure. Someone told me once that it was alright to do it through stationary traffic if you're going slow enough to stop if someone opens a door or merges suddenly. We mostly use it at stop lights. Hardly any other bikers I've seen have been brave/stupid enough to attempt it on the freeway. What with the way we drive 'round here.

I was thinking about this as I was filtering home tonight (yeah, maybe not the best use of brain capacity, but I can multitask Wink ) and I was contemplating the issue of spacial awareness.

'They' say that men have much better spacial awareness than women, so I'm curious as to how much effect that has on filtering. I know that I'm certainly prone to abandoning it as soon as the going gets tight and I'll quite often be sitting looking at a space going 'no way' when some bloke, invariably on a huge Pan with panniers twice as wide as my bike, will nip through and I'll kinda go Rolling Eyes and follow him.

Any ladies (or effeminate men) care to back me up, or is it just me that's crap? Very Happy

Me too. I find that I have to go for the gap when the traffic is still slowing to a halt because once I stop in the queue I think the gap between lanes is much smaller than it actually is - until someone trundles by and proves me totally wrong... Doh!

filtering is classed as overtaking.......so no zig zags, no sold white lines and no filtering after a no overtaking sign..do that with a copper watching and it's straight to jail, do not pass Go and do not collect £200 Smile..oh and another classic one is going the other side of traffic islands....a definate no no.

To many people when filtering don't look far enough ahead. Ignore the cars you're close to and look about 5-10 cars in front, aim to lok around the front wheels. The faster the traffic the easier it is as cars tend not to make sharp quick turns as they crash. 60mph+ filtering through non-moving traffic on somewhere like the Euston road isn't difficult as long as you look far enough ahead.

If anyone can lend me a camera I'd be pleased to film it.

if the traffic is statonary i will go for any gap, ive sometimes tapped both my mirrors at the same time (on the CBR125) and once walked thru a gap with both of them moved in leaning the bike over to avoid hitting stuff with the bar ends. got some funny lucks...but damn worth it.
in moving traffic...the speed limit up to 50 was my rule on the CBR, now i have the SV the game has changed just a little bit, and so long as theres nothing coming and i can get a wide enough berth i will overtake anything going slower then id like...also accounting for speed cammy's, known hazards (like the god awful roadworks on ardsley hill and the parked van thats allwasy there, wich no one EVER noticed untill the last min so they all swerve over and oh dear didnt see the motorbike did you, good job i know the road and was waiting 3 yeard behind ready to dust you off when/IF you move back into your lane!) or any large things like busses, HGV's ect

Well zig zags mean not to overtake the vehicle at the front, so you can technically filter over them as long as you do not pass the guy in the lead. Solid white lines you can also as long as you do not cross them, supposedly...

Filtering is safer down dual carriage ways and motorways....i.e. no pedestrians, no junctions etc.....just watch the gaps in the traffic....cars swop lanes and go into the gaps without looking.....no gaps and your safe. Filtering is actually safer when the traffic is moving. Around town in stationary traffic pedestrains cross the road and people use the junctions etc. I've even had people open car doors in stationary traffic on the off side!

After this topic I made a conscious effort to pay attention to what exactly I did when filtering. Actually slowed me down a little so as opposed to +30mph over the speed of traffic I was maybe doing +20mph on average. I do alter my speed an awful lot though, I am never more awake or aware while commuting while I am filtering.

I also did a cheeky tucking both my mirrors in to make it between two double deckers on West George Street. Got lots of looks Thumbs Up

I never imagined a Vespa to be a particularly wide bike? I always thought they were among the nimblest?

Don't do masses of city riding and as I'm STILL on the bloody 50cc, above 30 isn't an option. I tend to filter at anything up to top speed when I can, but it gets unnerving when people get close. I knocked a wing mirror with mine which was quite funny as I bet they were yelling even though it did nothing, as my wing mirrors twist back very easily.

In jammed traffic on a bank holiday I nearly got sandwiched between a caravan and 4x4, the scariest thing is I didn't see it coming, from then on I paid more attention when filtering.
