Would you get anything other than Japanese?

Let's have the following assumptions:

Arrow Using it everyday to commute (a lot of it is slow filtering there and back, with some gaps to really clear out the cobwebs, so it's a good mix).

Arrow Your mechanical knowledge is next to useless, so ideally you dont want something breaking down every 2 minutes!

Would you consider a Ducati for something like this?

I suppose it is a Ducati v Jap Bike (R6/Gixxer/Ninja) post!

Triumph BMW or Japanese for commuting.

a TT600 or a Daytona 600 would be a good choice... Wink

A Buell would go pop, a Ducati may go pop, a Benelli would cost a lot if it did go pop and an MV is too nice looking to commute on.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

A Ducati would be lush. With regard to your question though, it would depend on how much time you would be prepared to spend using public transport.

If you're looking at a proper ducati 'sports' bike (if any twin can really considered to be 'sports', until in WSB guise Smile ), then the 916/999 style ones have very 'extreme' riding positions, where a lot of the jap 4s don't.
Before I got my zx6 I was also considering an Aprilia Falco - a step down from the mille, but still relatively sporty.
However, in that vein, you'd be more looking at a 900/1000SS and getting away from the 'sports' side, but then you could get a TRX850, which is at least supposed to be generally better than the 900SS of the time - I've got one as they are pretty good value at the moment.

Much as I hate to admit it, there are some bargains on medium mileage TT600s out there - in my opinion they aren't quite as 'sharp' as the jap bikes generally, but then you can get a newer bike for less money Smile.

Personally I would probably look at a zx6 - comfortable enough to do distance, yet sharp enough to keep up with the less comfortable relatives.

I think the question that should be asked is 'how sporty do you want it to be'?

I would also consider getting a couple of bikes - I have a RS250 (12k when bought) for road fun and the TRX850 (25k) for 'getting to work' - add the two together and I've paid about £2400 for them. Obviously this has the added advantage that if there's a problem with one, I can just use the other etc.
