Filtering along an A-road, traffic stop start, 5mph max, I was filtering at about 15mph... practically snail pace, but it was chucking it down and I dont like riding in wet weather at the best of times!

Was following an SV650, he was about 3 car lenghts ahead of me. I then approach, to my right hand side, a white Astravan. As my front tyre is level with his rear quarter, he indicates left and starts to turn. (Note, I wasn't in his blind spot when he started to turn...) My natural instict here to attract his attention, wasn't to blast the horn, it was to give the bike some loud revs... but it was too late to go in any other direction, so i'm now alongside him and he's turning into me... his wing wirror just touched my right arm before he stopped in shock, as if to say "Where did you come from??"

Naturally I wasn't best pleased, not a good day to start the day!

Just shows when your doing something as dangerous as filtering youve GOT TO think of the stupidest thing that anyone can do, and then expect every single one of those cars to do it. That how you'll stay alive Thumbs Up . Glad to hear you kept it cool and are ok!

Next time instead of sounding the horn, brake instead before you pull alongside him Wink

Yeah I know what you mean, especially when you are filtering with no margin of error, and no escape route either. I suppose when filtering in the wet just have to knock your speed right down.

To be honest, this whole thing was avoidable.

Next time expect it.

From 15mph? Shocked

I'm more interested in why you were filtering on the left? Was it 2 lanes of traffic? In which case you should expect cars to realise that they're in the wrong lane and change.

And to be fair, he did indicate, most don't, and you did have time to react Thumbs Up

Perhaps filter slower than 15mph in the wet if you're not confident of your braking ability in such conditions.

I'm curious to know how this could have been avoided? The guy indicated and turned at the same time, i'm not psychic (sorry if that wasn't made clear in my initial post). It's a 3 lane A-road, so I was filtering, behind another bike, in between the middle lane and outside lane.

I do this journey every single day, I'm aware of the dangers and what to expect. I was positioned in the middle lane, but the very right hand side of the middle lane, just inside/hugging the white line, there's nothing I could do, thats the risk you take with filtering, clearly.

Maybe it couldn't have been avoided. But we weren't there so can only offer opinion/advice on what we've heard.

If he turned just as you were passing him then ok, it couldn't have been helped.

I just think I won't bother filtering when it's wet and/or dark, but then it only saves me five minutes anyway. (and I haven't had to ride in the wet yet!).

Point is - every journey and every rider is different. Something that seemed safe one day is unsafe the next. OK, so you made contact - but you weren't going so fast you couldn't stop (and with more confidence in braking you might have been able to stop anyway).

Every day I wimp out of filtering, only to see a scooter go shooting past. Or a big bike flying past a line of traffic where all I can see is junctions. We all have different perceptions of risk.

Well usually when the lane-changing muppets start, it's because small gaps in traffic open up to the side of them. I'm guessing the car had a gap to his (and your) left, which you should have anticipated he could move into. Usually they don't, but it just takes that 1% to have you off doesn't it.

Maybe next time you see a gap open up that they could dive into, hang back until the gap has gone and then move past swiftly.

Okay? Very Happy
