 Posted: 12:23 - 20 Aug 2005 Post subject: Fuel Prices - Is a Boycott Possible?? |
 |
|
Just had this chain email from several people.
| Quote: | Don't know about you guys but this actually does make a lot of sense. Worth trying me thinks but stick to it for a couple of months if you can. Can't say that we didn't try
See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it. We are hitting 95p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1 a ltr.
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the
idea:
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ...and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!
If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE. It's easy to make this happen.
Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Total Shell, Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso

BP ESSO supply a lot of gas stations not only BP/ESSO.
The boycott would only affect the franchised outlets not BP/ESSO directly.
THis is not a consumer issue.
Government allows the price increase not the consumer.
We allowed Thatcherbitch (long life marm) to bust the Trade Union movement. That in a way opened the flood gates for 'big business' to exploit the public.
I can't see any fairness in 'one man' getting paid £300,000 salary just coz he's smart and CEO.
It's immoral.

They pay $2 a gallon. We pay £4 a gallon. Current exchange rates make their fuel between three and four times cheaper than ours. The difference? The scumsucking governments tax different things. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

prices arent just raising due to taxation, they have risen recently due to political "situations" in the middle east with all the shit going down there, its about time people started to believe that oil itself is a problem, wich it is, our economy is too closely tied to its "abundance" look how a slight change in its price has got us all jumping thru hoops, we wouldnt want to give this kind of direct economic control to ANYONE let alone another country in the middle east who could just turn around and tell us to go stick it anytime! then where would we be!
Oil is a major cause of conflict, unsustainable economic growth and massive environmental damage, its about time the pressure got tough so people start to panic a little, experts predicted it would have to rise to about £3 per litre before any serious deviation to other fuels takes place, maybe it will be sooner judging by the reactions from just about everyone i talk to, and the sooner it does happen the better.
and to say you hope you wont be around by then is just plain selfish, thats what the previous generation thaught when they began to exploit oil and other fossil fuels on a large scale.
##as far as all the govenment bashing thats been going on in regards to trade unions and the thatcher era (90% of women managers really do fuck it up no matter how sexist you think that is, and in no way am i saying men are any better, we just fuck it up in different ways) should be saved for another thread in the flame wars section (just a suggestion)
back to this topic, the above should express my views accordingly, the Oil economy is non-sustainable and its collapse will lead to the collapse of the western economies unless we all wake up and see that the prices are rasing, and they will continue to do so.
look at all the evidence, Oil companies are MERGING a definite sign that their advisors believe that there is a tough time ahead, we are beginning to see the first effects of that, and when the peak oil effect kicks in then this will get 10x worse! ____________________ Anyone stupid enough to think we will drag a load of wooden horses full of soldiers into our city is certanley stupid enough to drag all of ours into theirs! |

the day after i saw the article in MCN i went to my local BP in my helmet with 100% tint visor and filled up with the visor down, not even a hint of a problem.
apologies for length but i think its a funny story
once in the cage i had a nightmare at a petrol station, i rolled up and put £20 into the tank, outside there was NO SIGN AT ALL that there was any problem with the tills inside and below the prices of fuels it said "All major cards accepted". so after i filled up i went inside and got out my visa electron debit card which is accepted anywhere a Visa card is. i went to pay for fuel and the woman said "oh its not taking your card the till system has been playing up recently". so i just said "oh i dunno what to do then", and she tried again and said "oh no the tills a bit broke it wont let me take it". i had been to the same station 2 weeks earlier and paid with the exact same card no problem. so then the cashier told me i would have to use the little cash machine in store to withdraw £20 and pay for my fuel in cash, which would have been ok but the cash machine charged £1.75. faced with this i said i would not use the cash machine and pay £1.75 because their till system was "broken," the cashier then got very short with me and quite aggressive saying i had to or i would be arrested and i said "my mums a police officer and my dads a police sergent i think i know when im committing an offence thankyou." and she began saying to her colleuges "just because his dads a copper he thinks he can get away with it" as well as telling every customer that came in that i wa "refusing to pay," "because his dads a sergent and he wont pay to use the cash machine" I said i would pay the £20 minus £1.75 for using the cash machine and allow them to get the £1.75 form the cash machine owners to which she said "the cash machine is nothing to do with us". (i still refuse to believe its in their petrol station using their electricity and taking up space and they dont earn a penny for it.) Eventually the cashier rang the police and told them that i had refused to pay ect before being asked to pass the phone to me. the woman on the phone was a telephone operator for the police and told me that my dads job was irrelevant and that "no one likes paying to use cash machines but youve got to" and she went on to say "do u want to be arrested for £1.75? just use the machine and pay". now 25 minutes after putting in petrol finally defeated i used the cash machine and paid before calling my dad at work to ask his advice. He then rang Nottinghamshire police as he works for Derbyshire and explained the story and asked to make a complaint. after listening to the story the police telephone operator on the other end of the phone said "well i dont think we did anything wrong theres no grounds for a complaint sir im sorry" My dad replied "im a uniform sergent with derbyshire constabulary, i think i know when there is and isnt grounds for a complaint........now lets start again.................................................................................................hello there id like to make a complaint please"
in the end i got a formal apology form the petrol station manager, the £1.75 refunded and a formal apology form the telephone operator that i had spoke to in the petrol station.
I still refuse to use JET petrol stations now, the cashier was a middle aged woman and was being very aggressive to me as well as telling all the customers that i was refusing to pay, being arrogant and 'thought i could get away with it' ____________________ Bah Humbug |

The only problem with 'winning' is that had his dad not been a police officer, the operator would have played silly buggers and refused to do anything. I'm not saying the system is bent, it's just they'll screw over anyone who doesn't know their rights all for an easier life. ____________________ I must not be a troll...
