Right, ive noticed on my last few rides out that my ts is making a ticky sound. I think its coming from the engine. I do have a 70 cc big bore fitted and the mixture is running fine.

It tends to happen when i am about 7000k rpm plus, which is basically my powerband, and happens when im going up a slight hill.
Any one any ideas, because i dont want to wreck this bike because i only need it for a few more months and i need to sell it in order to help pay for my zxr.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Difficult to know from a description of the noise.

However one possible would be pinking. To count this out fill up with super unleaded next time (or Optimax / BP Ultimate / etc) and then see if it still happens. Higher octane fuel should reduce pinking. If that is the problem then there are a few causes but probably best to decoke it first, either by taking the head off and cleaning up in there or just giving it a few doses of Redex (not as good). Also check the ignition timing.

However that is very much a guess. Could be quite a few things.

All the best

Keith

My first inclination would be to say your top end bearing is gone, but i'm not sure because you say it's only at high rpm.

It could be that something is loose. My bike has an annoying rattle (something's loose on the fairing) when it's past 5,500 rpm.

It could well be that the carbs need balancing. It happened on my XJR and that sorted it.

Good point. If that's the case, you'll need a smaller main jet.

What make is the carb and what size?

TS50 so would need at least another carb before you could balance them Wink .

its detonating, which is not good. the ticking you are hearing is tiny explosions knocking small lumps out of the piston crown.

take the head off and have a look, you will probably have some tiny craters around the edge of the piston and the head.

causes: running lean, compression too high, air leakage into the cylinder or inlet, timing off. cheap fuel.etc etc.

whatever the cause, its just on the edge of ok; when you are going up a hill you are putting more load on the motor, which takes it over into the danger zone.

you might find running it on optimax cures it.......

Would this have just started recently, its never made this noise before. Recently i have changed sprockets to give me a little more top end, could this be putting more strain on the engine?

I would take the top end off but ive had a stud bolt snap on me before, this bore had been played with a few times. I am curious though i might go and have a peep.

Jamie, this will place more strain on the motor, especially whilst going up an incline, as you are loading the motor from low to high revs, worsened by the fact that you have made the gearing taller.

yeah, making it work harder will increase the chance of detonation. also, if you have a lot of carbon build up on the head or piston crown (eg from using cheap 2t oil or petrol or having the oil pump set too high) this can promote detonation.

so detonation can occur out of the blue, even if you havent made any changes to the motor.

run it on optimax first, if the ticking gets less or goes away, thats an indication that it is detonating.

Thanks for all the information. Today when i go out i am going to try the different fuel. If i find it is plinking (detonation) how do i go about sorting it?

Thanks in advance.

like i said, detonation could be caused by many things, an air leak, lean jetting, carbon deposits, too much compression (is the head skimmed?) incorrect timing......or simply crap petrol

check the simple stuff first, timing, air leaks etc. clean and set the carb up properly. as for compression, check to see if its been skimmed, while you are in there clean any carbon off. pattern base gaskets are often thinner than genuine ones, this can raise the compression and alter the port timing, admittedly not by much, but it might be enough to cause problems if other things arent right.

the other thing it could be is a loose or broken ring, detonation sounds more like a load of small ball bearings in a tin can, a ring gone usually makes more of a regular ticking sound....

Gavin

I was speaking to him on mIRC last night. Tend to agree that it is detonation.

Worth noting that he has a big bore kit on it, so not sure how the compression is now, and also that he has reused the head gasket. Possible the gasket is leaking (they have given a very rapid "crack - crack - crack" noise when I have heard a blow head gasket on an air cooled engine), but also quite possible that reusing the gasket will compress it more and raise the compression even further.

Hopefully a tank of Optimax or equivalent will noticeably reduce the problem which will support the idea that it is detonation and then he can go from there in solving it. Hopefully it is just due to a build up of carbon.

All the ebst

Keith

While out today i fulled up with super unleaded form texco, only place over here. I only filled up 2/3 or the tank with it because i still had some normal in there. while riding today towards the end of the ride i noticed it making a kinda of whiney sound up hills. the ticking sound has now gone onto flat/downhill/uphill in any gear at about 7500 rpm.

Im thinking top end bearing maybe? It could just me being paranoid because i was listening out for it today.

Thanks again

Hi

Detonation problems should get less severe with the slightly higher octane fuel. From what you have described you seem to think it has got worse.

Time to take the top end off the engine. Easy enough on an air cooled 2 stroke.Check what the problem is and then replace the bits.

All the best

Keith

well my friend said it didnt sound anything from the ordinary, something quite interesting, ive now gotten onto the super unleaded part of my tank and my bike stalls as soon as i let the throttle off. Shocked or must it be something else?

Hi

The fuel should mix pretty quickly. You should have been running on that "bit of the tank" within a mile or 2.

All the best

it should still idle on super unleaded. its only the optimax and similar bp stuff that you sometimes need to re jet for. they have more 'density' or something IIRC so you sometimes need to lean the jetting off a bit. try turning the mixture screw out, it might help, but like i say it shouldnt matter on superunleaded.

sounds like you should really strip that top end off and have a look.............

Whats up with me bike Sad. sometimes it will idle others it wont. i replaced the gear box oil today, finding quite a bit in there but not enough and also it was almost like water. Some new stuff in but now it just shuts stright off and sounds all chokey.

Start the bike up. Get it running warm (take it out for about 30 mins). Then adjust the idle screw (it's on the side of the carb. Can't miss it, it takes a flat head screwdriver). Turn it slightly clockwise. This should get the idle a bit higher.

Hi

Gearbox oil should not have any effect on idling (or running). Yes, being really picky, more / thicker oil can have an effect but it will be very marginal.

However you say the oil level was low. Worn clutch side main bearing seal? This wears the engine sucks a small amount of gearbox oil in. Tends to make the bike smoke a fair amount as well. Could affect the idle if you added oil and now there is more so it is sucking more in. However this is very much a wild guess.

Really do agree with Gavin that you should pull the head and barrel off and check the top end out.

All the best

Keith

If you want a really quick 'solution' set the idle speed high, take the airbox off and dribble some Redex straight into the carburettor body. If it is carbon deposits, that should help the problem. Seeing as the two-stroke head has no valvetrain, removing it to have a look is easy. If you're unsure whether it needs decoking, post a picture and I'm sure people here can tell you.

Just make sure you have the right new gaskets, a socket set and torque wrench to reassemble it with. A Haynes or Clymer manual is also a very good idea. Eliminate the simple problems first before you start looking for more expensive ones.

To that end, stripping and cleaning the carburettor sounds like it could be a good idea.
