Just a few questions what are the major differences between the sports yamaha, suzuki, honda and kawasaki 600's, and also the 1000's. And what sort of differences am i looking at between the 600's and 1000's performance-wise. Or is there a site i can just look at for comparisons? Any advice and help will be much appreciated.

Probably the best idea is to get hold of a copy of Bike/Ride, they usually have a list of specifications towards the back of the magazine.

Nowadays the 600's & 1000's are very similar in terms of acceleration (0-60), however their top ends & quarter mile times are different (Jap 600's typically top out around the 160 odd mph, wheres as the 1 litre bikes top out between 170-180 mph)

Best idea is to arrange as many test rides as possible.

Although this will be difficult if you are a new rider and under 25.

My local dealer only allows test rides if you have had your full licence for 3 years and you have had a similar class bike before, unfortunately. But you might be able to arrange to go pillion with one of the staff if you are serious and you can go in at a quiet time. Fortunately for me I have known them for over 15 years and the mechanic is one of my old mates.

I would suggest that you go for a middleweight easy to ride bike like a hornet, or SV as a first step, because you might find a more racy bike a bit too much of a handful, and the handling extremely difficult.
I went from an old commuter GSX250 to a nearly new GPZ600R and the step was too big and I was left miles behind on the corners, on ride outs, It put me off bikes for ten years, but now I'm back with an SV and it's easy to ride and I find it much easy to chuck around corners.

Weight comes into play aswell as speed.
a 600 will do 100 mph easyly and for quite a while where a 1000+ will do it at lower revs saving fuel and still keeping plenty of power in reserve.
i have a zzr 1200 and yet the difference between that and a zx12 r are huge, mines heavier so cornering will be slower as will acceleration and breaking distances.

Like acid said, get on a few different bikes and see what you think.
I chose mine mainly for comfort. just the right hight and arm reach for my 6' 4" frame a zx 12 was more scrunched up. If your planning distances take that into account aswell.
