Steering head bearings replacement - expected cost?

Mine are fairly loose again now and after nearly 48,000 miles they're probably due for replacement. Anyone got any idea of how much a shop should charge for parts + labour?

When I had mine done on the Varadero they cost me about £30 for the bearings plus about 2 hours labour (@ £32 P/H) plus the dreaded VAT. Evil or Very Mad

Take the old one's out and take them to a bearing shop , will save you a fortune if it's anything like wheel bearings .

steering head bearings... are about 25-30 quid.

depends if you are replacing both sets of bearings...

TOP:
1) remove any fairing/brackets
2) undo clamps holding forks on
3) Undo big bolt holding the top yoke on
4) lift top yoke using handle bars
5) swap bearings (if not replacing bottoms, reverse order)

BOTTOMS:

1) base bike on main stand/car jack (so front wheel is of the ground)
2) undo bottom yoke fork bolts
3) slide wheel down to the ground (remove forks if perfered)
4) pull bottom yoke/steering column out of frame
5) replace bearings

^^^reverse procedure to fit again

Another vote for around the £30 mark, depends on bike and if pattern or original parts.
Depends on your bike and how you use it but you might want to consider tapered roller bearings as a replacement.

Hi

Bearings are around £30 as mentioned, but the problem with getting them from a bearing shop is the need for the seal on the lower bearings (sometimes built into the OE bearing so not available as a seperate part, and supplied with the aftermarket bearing kits).

Bottom bearing is the one that takes most of the load and the one most likely to be wrecked.
