Liquid cooled? Loosing coolant? Coolant getting in, head gasket. That would make the oil go milky though.

Smell the oil. Could it be fuel getting in?

Best I can do. Sorry if no help, but puts the post back on top for ya if nothing else.

Start from the beginning. Engine oil is not usually red. What has changed?

OK. It normally goes brown or black after a few hundred miles, but sometimes stays the original colour on small bikes / very new bikes.

So, you haven't changed the oil, or topped it up or done anything.

It's a lighter colour - Is it frothy? If so, as everyone has said - it might be water mixing in with the oil.

I'm quite sure now that you have water getting in. It may have been happening for some time, getting gradually worse, or it might have happened suddenly.

This is often just a gasket failure, which is not that expensive.
A check can be to see if the coollant level has dropped. Also check if water can get in some other way - crank breather, filler cap left off etc. But my money's on a gasket.

You should not ride the bike if possible with the oil like this, and if you must to get to a dealer - be gentle with the gearbox and keep the revs down.

You can do an oil change and ride it - but look for how soon it comes back.

BFG Has got it all under control by the sound of things.

I'd be whipping off the head. Hope it ain't a crack in the head or block. Look at the head gasket carefully. You see trace lines where the coolant has gone through. Can't think of anything else.

I'm talking fairly blind though, as I was a car mechanic for loads of years. Never bikes.

If your not mechanically minded, do what BFG says. Change the oil and run it to a garage. We used to have a coolant tester (for the cars though), and it would help with correct diagnosis.

Good luck. I don't think it should be too painful, especially if you're good with spanners and have a haynes manual.

Hi

I agree that it sounds like water has got into the gearbox. Probably the seal on the water pump (inside the clutch cover probably).

Had something similar with a car getting water into the power steering fluid. It went from a clearish red colour to something that looked a bit like strawberry milkshake.

All the best

Keith

I'd check it again when it's cold - oil does froth up in use, maybe you've just not noticed it before?

I'm with Keith on the water pump diagnosis, my SV did the same thing. The gasket for the side casing had split and some of the coolant was getting into the oil.

Not an expensive or slow fix, but worth getting it sorted quickly.
