Wierd scraping noise. part 2, this time its personal!

Anyway, some of you may remember i had posted about a wierd noise my kymco was making, well ive traced it down to the chain being loose and grinding against the centerstand.

Which brings me onto my 2nd problem, my local garage is booked full and wont be able to take my bike until the end of never, so i am proposing to deal with this myself.

I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to tighten my chain, i think there is probably enough slack to remove a link, but im unsure how to do this. Any and all comments are welcomed

You don't have to remove links to tighten your chain!

There are some bolts in the end of your rear axle that push the back wheel backwards, thereby tightening your chain.

If your rear wheel is as far back as it will go, then you need a new chain and sprockets.

Ah yes, i saw those. the wheel is as far foward as it can go, so all i need do is move it back? how much slack chould i have in the chain normally?

Depends on the bike, but usually about 1.5 inches of movement in the middle of the slack bit of chain.

/edit - remember to loosen the big nut on your rear axle before you start playing with the tensioning bolts, and to tighten everything up again before you ride the thing!

Cant get the bloody bolts off!! i have a mate in the harbor who i might be able to get to use a pnumatic ratchet thingy. Scared the shite out of me today, i was on the way to the docs, and downgeared to use engin braking to slow me as usual, and all of a sudden the bike starter buggering all over the place as it made the sound of a jumbo jet landing without it undercarage down! everyone was looking wondering,,,did that little bike make all that noise?? lol.

Be careful. If your chain snags and breaks, if it's spinning fast enough it can crack your engine casing.

Do you have a manual?? If so it should explain in there how to tighten the chain. It is usually a case of releasing the axle nuts AND on my bike the bolt that allows the brake caliper to move with the axle. The adjuster nuts pointing out from the swing arm can then be turned to pull the wheel back. Don't do it too tight and always always check the tension after tighening the wheel nuts and with the bikes on its wheels.
Please do it soon as a chain that derails can lock the wheel which could be nasty.
Better if you have someone who can show you.

Cant find a manual anywhere, ive only ever seen 1 other bike the same as mine, so they are pretty rare. I was crapping myself all the way home in case the rear wheel locked. Same thing happened my dad when he had a bike,,,,many,,,,many,,,,many moons ago. It sent him into some poor womans garden as his wheel locked as he went round a corner.

step 1: Aquire socket set

Step 2: loosen off the wheel spindle(axle) buy loosening the big nut.

step 3: tighten the two nuts at the back of each side of the swing arm EVENLY (or the wheel will be cockeyed) until the chain shows about an inch of slack. The nuts may have a second locknut as well, remember to retightn the locknut.

Step 4: Retighten the spindle nut.

What do you suppose causes the chain to slacken anyway?

Think i know the theory behing tightening it now, just gotta get the axle bolt undone tomorow.

You could try spraying the nut with Plus Gas. Then leave for a few mins before trying the nut.
Then again you haven't got back to us....should we fear the worst?

still cant shift the bolt! and the local garage is backed up with bookings so i cant get it done for ages still! Im sure once i get the bolt undone it will just be a 3 minute job, but ive tried almost everything, WD-40, hammers, swearing at it!

a good quality ratchet and a scaff bar will shift ANY nut that can be shifted (either that or it will round the head off)

My mate says hes going to ask in the docks if he can bring my bike into his workshop to get medievil on the nut, ie use a pnumatic ratchet etc.

is it customary for a mechanic to chech the chain tension on a routine service? Because i find it hard to believe that since my last service my chain has gone from normal, to dangerously loose.

lol well the bike hasnt had a bother before this. and it seems a pretty rudementary thing, so there souldnt be too much bother.

HEY ALL, just back from the docks, and had my mate air ratchet the bolt off, the power of those things must be huge. Anyway, bolt undone, i adjusted the wheel, so the chain has about 1.5 inch of play, and tightened the bolt back up again. Job done in under 3 min lol. The noise has disapeared, and whats more, my rear brake seems to be alot better [better indicates i can exert more power on the rear brake] all round, im a happy bunny. thanks for all your help every1
