I'm interested in this too. I fitted one and all the profits of doom have been warning me off impending disaster.
Oh and can you get a chain that has done a couple of hundred miles riveted?
Cheers

No problems with split link chains here, though I've only had a wee bike with rather little torque. The thing I like about them most is being able to remove the chain to clean it and free siezed links after neglect in winter. Whistle

Hi

Used split link chains quite a few times. There is currently one on the GPZ500. Came with both but the rivit link was impossible to fit.

All the best

Keith

I have had two split links fail at speed on GPZ500s. As such, I always use rivets on a bike over 250cc.

Hi

Had rivit links fail as well, and split link chains fail other than on the link.

To be honest on the GPZ500 with split link was a pig to get in place. About as tight fitting as a rivit link is normally.

All the best

Keith

Scotoiler fitted on mine both times, sheared through the back-plate and spat off.

I once snapped an endless chain too, but that one was past due changing.

I've seen 2 new chains shed their split links in the last 2 months, both fitted by the other mechanic at my work. I will only fit them on 420/428 chains.

Anything bigger and I use the soft rivet but I use the proper tool not the piece of shit motion pro tool sold by M&P but the Whale tool which costs a small fortune. I haven't had a single chain I've fitted fail.

OK so maybe I should get the chain riveted. Any thoughts on my question about rivetting a lightly used chain. I have the soft link I could get the bike shop to do it for me.

I think it would be fine. A lot of people will fit their own chain with the split link then ride the bike somewhere to have the soft-link fitted.
