Quote:
A technique called 'bumping' can open most mechanical pin-tumbler locks damage free, in little time, with little training and using only inexpensive tools. Even a number of high security locks can be rapidly opened damage free with this technique. When this message hit Dutch media all hell broke loose. There where even questions asked in Dutch parliament. Some part of the lock industry decided it was time for some good old snake oil. They claimed there is no threat and even advised people to 'go to sleep safely' without fixing the problem.

In this workshop Barry Wels and Han Fey will react to these statements, explain how bumping works, demonstrate on stage how easy it is to make your own bumpkeys and show what lock manufacturers have (tried to) come up with to protect their locks against this problem.

basicly you take a blank key and modify it so its all the same sorta patern down it like just all triangles pic explains if you look at key its gotta be cut deep though. hit it in a lock with say a screwdriver handel the key then will twist the lock open !!

If you look at this key its got alot deeper cuts in it the shoulder (the thing that stops it going all the way in has been cut back) is shaved back and it took him about 30 seconds to file from a key from a different lock and it worked with one tap.

This is whats ment by low cut see how low the cuts are compared to a normal key. it can all be done with a normal file as well.

What type of key. its the key part that counts. bump works with normal style keys not those stubby little round things.

Those round key locks are the worst of the lot. There are a couple of decent ones but most can be opened in 3 seconds with the right technique.

Yes, the some of little round key locks can be opened with the back end of a BIC pen. Even better if it's chewed a little. You just jam the other end of it right into the curcular lock, and the broken bits of plastic fill up the "keyed" parts of the lock and it just turns.

Sorry Mate

I've connected to work to download the vid so should have it in about 5 minutes.
I'v got the Motrax Sirka which apparently took over 2 minutes with a "level 3" attack.
Reakon theey use this bumping technique when testing the locks?

This is worrying, so much for getting a decent chain and lock.

this "bumping" isn't doing anything a traditional locksmith's pick set doesn't do, in fact it's less effective, as you're going to have to get a new blank for each lock you hit from what I understand.

there's ways around most locks if you know how.

most new barrel locks are bic-proof, it tended to be a particular design of barrel that was vulnerable.

the pin/blade style keys that you get on most decent locks are picproof. (like a flat blade, with indentations on the flats, not along the edge)
