Right, my 2 years CBT runs out on 12th October this year. But Ive got my Full Car Driving licence. So does that mean I can carry on riding anything upto 125cc on L plates.

Also, If I decide to take my Restricted access, Does it mean I have to take another CBT if I do it after my current one runs out?

I hope it dosent because it means Ill have to splash out £70+ on some shoddy training what Ive already done.

Unfortunately it does, you can't take your test without having a valid CBT. Also, your driving license doesn't mean a thing towards your CBT, still have to have it.

I was told that providing you have taken your CBT in the past, a driving licence means you can ride up to 125 on L plates for the time your Driving licence is valid (50 odd years for me)

Nope having a Car licence is irrelevant, you have to take CBT every 2 years until you have passed your bike test.

you can only carry a pillion and have no L plates on a restricted 50cc moped-nothing more until you have passed your test. You can do the moped bit off your car license as you passed you car test before february 2001.

The idea of a CBT is to use it to practice for your test on the road.

I personally think it should be valid for a maximum of 6 months - if you can't pass your test in that time then you deserve to retake the CBT!

Read what the DSA has to say......
https://www.dsa.gov.uk/FAQs.asp?cat=33
It goes on to say :
If you passed a car test before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete CBT to ride a moped but you do have to take a CBT to ride a motorcycle.

However, if you passed your car test after 1 February 2001 and you wish to ride a moped or motorcycle you will need to complete CBT.

[quote="carvell"]The idea of a CBT is to use it to practice for your test on the road.

Wrong the cbt was not and is not to let you practise for the test.

It was introduced in 1990 to help reduce accident rates among new riders, which it did and does. It replaced the old version of 1 year to pass the part 1 test then another to do part 2, if you didnt pass part 1 in a year you were not allowed to ride for a year.

You need a cbt to ride a bike upto 125 cc regardless of a full car license or not

Disagree with you there dude.

Not everyone would have the time or the money to do it (take the test) in the 6 months.

Also if you took your CBT on say October and didn't ride through the winter you would only get 2 months from it.

CBT and the smaller bikes are often a quick route to riding on the road for work etc.

I agree with Carvell.

Its a gateway to doing the test, not something that should be used on its own.

Don't agree with it being only 6 months, but I like the idea of having to wait a year to take another one after it expires, added incentive.

As for the rich kid comments, if you can afford to buy, insure, and run a bike, you can afford the 60 quid to do your theory and practical.

book it now if you don't want to be hanging around because you might have to wait 4 weeks like I am if their busy, they only ask for a 25 quid deposit and you can pay the rest of it on the day.
