hehe ive done that before Laughing

One of the worst things ive done though was riding into a concrete pillar in the bike sheds at college. I was slowly riding round and turning to get into a space... just going round in a semi circle at about 3mph until a small "thump" and the front wheel hits the pillar... i loose balance, slip and slide and im gone Embarassed

Was dreadfull as there was about 5 chavs on their scoots watching at the time Embarassed

lol been done by me also, was wheeling my bike across some gravel, lost balance and slip, away it goes. Also forgot to put the side stand down once, went to lean it on the stand, found nothing there, lost footing, down it went. CLUNK!

Left the chain through the rear wheel. Rolling Eyes Rush hour outside Curry's. Fun. I didn't drop it at least, and no damage done.

Hmmm i've always let my bikes warm up a little before i start riding them. I'm not sure that zooming off on them straight away is a good idea

i wouldnt do it

try starting up a 2 stroke and riding away and it will just stall on you

you certainly shouldnt leave a bike idling for too long thats true

even 4 stroke bikes need warming up to an extent before riding off

Any high-revving 2-stroke needs to be warmed up before being ridden at higher revs. The piston can heat up faster than the cylinder and can cause a seizure if pushed to too high an rpm too soon. Even if it doesn't seize it will accelerate ring/bore wear over time. Some bikes don't mind being ragged off the bat, I've always done it with my 50ccs, never the Yamaha, though. But I know that even RS 50's have a temperature which should be acheived before moving off, as stated by the manual.

However, it's true that you don't necessarily need to let it idle in place. You can accelerate away immediately after starting the bike as long as you keep the revs down for a minute or two before really giving it some.

I always warm up before riding off. The oil will be too thick, until it reaches its operating temp, to give the engine the correct protection and lubrication.

I only start revving the nuts off of mine when it gets to temp.

unless he means that the worst thing you can do IS to start up and move off straight away...

otherwise I'd be interested to hear how letting a bike sit on tick over for a few minutes could damage it. Keep letting it warm up, definately a good idea Thumbs Up

You certainly want to give it long enough to get the oil flowing throughout the whole thing, particularly the valvetrain and into the main bearing journals (though those should be supplied pretty much first of anything). That needn't take very long of course, and if you just set off upshifting early and not revving enthusiastically for several minutes, on a four stroke you should be fine.

Two strokes don't use a pressurised oil system so I can see that it might take a rather longer time to get the bearings lubricated properly before you want to thrash it.
