I am compiling a list of bikes to test ride b4 i decide what to get.
I want to try all different sorts of bikes and may end up owning two of different characters ie 250scooter+rs250

so far i have this list (it changes day by day)

honda transalp
honda vfr750
burgman 250/majesty 250
rs250/rgv250
gsxr600/cbr600/r6
gpz500
HONDA NT650V DEAUVILLE
kle500 (trail bike based on gpz500)
tdm/trx 850
gt550 (six cylinder shaft drive unfaired)

however i know nothing about cruisers and the only one i could think of to try is
virago 250, 400 or 535

i might see if i can get a ride on a harley but i doubt id buy one as i have heard they are a bit over priced

For a cruiser I wd want a feet forward riding position with the rider as close to hoziontal as possible.

any suggestions ?

The big Yam XVs are good, especially the 650 Dragstar - footrests and gear/back brake are so far forward on those that I couldn't actually reach them when we hired one on holiday last year!

Kawasaki VN Vulvans might also fit the bill, as would the larger Honda Rebels or Shadows.

The bigger motors tend to be more laid back, smaller cruisers tend to have more upright positions, dunno why.

A Guzzi California would be good for a laugh to test ride, also Sachs do a big v-twin (800cc IIRC) that is fairly laid back.

If you want a Harley, V-rods are soooo sexy! Wink

What about a muscle bike or power cruiser? V-max's are good, as are Magnas. Suzuki do the Intruders in a few different sizes too. And of course the best one of all, the Eliminator range...... have I mentioned that I like Eliminators? I have? Oops.... Embarassed

I like the look of the Majesty 125's, but are the 250's the same styling?

I actually saw a chav riding a Majesty 125 once. Shocked

Hoziontal? Do you mean horizontal? If you do then you would be lying down on your bike Shocked. I think you actually want to be vertical Wink

I love my VFR 750, but it pretty much does everything, which means its kind of like lots of different bikes.

If you are looking for a couple of bikes with very different characters, it might not be what you're looking for.

i definitiely dont want to be vertical
i want the laid back feet forward position where you are leaning back
as close to horizontal as possible if i could get a bike that you could ride lieing down flat, that wd be great

vfr750 wd be very different to my rs125 so they wd be a nice pair
insurance on vfr750 isnt too bad for me either

yes i was talking about r1's recently cos a bloke is selling one near me. its probably a bit extreme for me but it wd be good to test ride and i could afford to get it if i wanted

i want to sample differnt types of bike to see what suits me and no one seems to talk about cruisers on forums so id like to know what the good ones are that are a relaxed seating postion as tho you were leaing back in an armchair

so thanx to babyam for the suggestions

HI,

I've got a Kawasaki Eliminator bn125, and I love it.

It is feet forward, big comfy seat (for my big comfy ass Embarassed ) very relaxed riding position.

Saying that though, as much as I love it, don't expect to be flying off from the lights, it's not got the fastest acceleration, and the top speed i've managed so far is 70mph, which in any case is the speed limit Wink

I've never had to put more than a fiver of petrol in it at any given time yet lol, and it does about 100 Mile a tank full (about £13 lol )

It wasn't bad on insurance, but that was when I only had my CBT, would be even better I imagine now I have a full license (I must ring them).

Another thing, I can't find many bits and pieces on the second hand market (ebay etc) but it is an older model (1998) I've had to have a new chain and sprockets last month and that cost £120, but it was the best chain I could get for it.

Personally I'm not into sports bikes, and when I move up to a bigger bike i'll be looking at either a bigger Eliminator, Dragstar or the Valkyrie ranges.

Good luck with what ever you choose!

My dad has a Valkyrie Interstate and he loves it. When i had my NSR125 he kept saying "Ah, son, theres no substitute for cc's....". Git.

But now i have a VFR750 i'm going to see if he'll trade me a go on it for a blast on the Valkyrie. Very Happy Its an awesome machine, although i think the interstate version is hideous myself, and it has a great sound from the flat six. I reckon i can persuade him to give me a go, he's missing having a V4 (he used to have a Pan European).

i will make up my own mind but its always good to ask for advice.
If I follow thru with my plan of test riding 20 bikes b4 i buy one, it will be from experience rather than what i like the look of.
At the moment I have not ridden many bikes so I dont know what i like yet.

yeah valkyrie is nice but its so big it might not fit in the alley i keep my bike in ! i will need a tape measure. I read a book on bikes that said it handles well for a cruiser too. (top100 bikes by the bloke that did bikes for top gear)

Shocked Are you sure? My 250 Eliminator does about 100 miles to a tank too, but my tank only holds about £7. Seems odd that a 125 would give such poor mpg?

Well if you were layed back with your feet forward how would you be able to see where you are going? You would be looking up at the sky.

The weight all on your spine, your arms straight out and spread wide apart? No thanks. Smile The moment your back is past the vertical backwards (without a backrest) is the moment you've lost control of the bike as you'll end up hanging on the bars.

I imagine this is the sort of thing you're after:

Yamaha Dragstar.

i dont want wide bars as id like them to only be a shoulders width apart and i dont have big shoulders

i dont want all the weight on my spine which is why i dont want vertical, i want to be leaing back agaisnt some kind of backrest so the dragstar looks good

I have a crazy push bike that has the kind of riding postion id love on a motorbike. It has a full back length hammock back rest which is about 60degrees to the horizontal rather than 90

(not me in pic)

Hi,
I probably Got it wrong. the tank is 3.4 Gallon (about 15 litres?) and it does around 47MPG.

I am with Machaggis on this one.

For some reason lot of people seem to completly overlook Yamaha Dragstars, i consider them the personification of all thins cruiserish.

Basically a lower down, more feet forward, longer and louder (bigger exhausts) version of the Intruder/Virago, the kind of style focuessed one as opposed to anything else.

https://bike-exchange.com/Yamaha%20XVS125%20Dragstar%20LIB.jpg

I owned a champagne version of the above and found it eveything i ever wanted in a cruiser.

yes i am not thinking the dragstars are where its at when it comes to cruisers

the dealer near me has a 125 dragstar and a 1100 dragstar

i dont think they will let me try the 1100 as its practically new

unfortunately the 125 dragstat doesnt have the same laid back seating position.

i have a feeling i can only try 2 bikes at this dealres b4 they get pissed off, although this cd be jsut the irritable guy i spoke to

other bikes they ahve that im interested in are 250, sv650, tdm 850, r6, mille

so the 125 dragstar isnt exactly top of my list at the moment
