Heya,

When I set up my insurance, they didn't mention anything about pillion passengers. I have my full license but am restricted to 33bhp. I asked him to add ability to carry pillions and he said that I couldn't.

He said that legally, i wasn't able to carry them in the first place as I didn't have a full license. At the time, I didn't mind and left it at that as I didn't wanna carry anybody around.

However, now I do... am wondering whether I should give them a call and see what the heck he was going on about and whether I can upgrade...

Has anybody else experienced insurance companies declining them ability to carry pillions?

Regards,
Chris

Psst... I think they're either say that the insurance company that they've put me with either dont support it, or they do but at a cost of say £150. lol... Not had any luck with insurance companies...

I'm moving in a couple weeks, and I'll be losing the luxury of a garage, and i have a really bad feeling that the insurance company will again either not support it, or charge me through the roof...

Anybody live up in York and keep their bike outside? What kinda rates do you get?

Sounds like your insurance company are a bunch of dicks.

Who are they? (broker and underwriter) So I know never to call them.

Rampdale charged me £75 to change my details (license/bike). I was so desperate to ride the VFR I actually paid it.

But I've renewed my insurance with someone else now...but i was still an idiot for paying it.

[edit]

Ask to speak to their manager/supervisor as your 33bhp license does allow you to take pillions.

That is stupid.
You have a bike licence..an A2.
This entitles you to ride a bike without L plates, and carry pillions. You can go on motorways...

Why the hell would he tell you that ?

I have the same licence, and never have I been asked during a quote if I was going to carry pillions, or told I couldn't.

Change that company !! LF ring around every company you come across !
They vary so much..some try to bleed you dry and are rude and greedy.
The ins for my FZR for example...one company tried giving all the gob and quoted £850!! Another £280.
Same policy..same details (checked with a fine-toothed comb).
Just robbers Evil or Very Mad

When I was ringing around for insurance, about half the companies I phoned asked if I would be taking a pillion or not. Every time I was asked, I asked if it would reduce the premium by saying no. I was told it would not.

Therefore, I chose to include the pillion clause, as it seemed free. If I hadn't, and they then tried to charge me later for adding it on, there would be an argument. Wink

As for the licence thing, I find a lot of people who do phone work have a set of standard lies they've developed, in order to stop customers asking too many questions. If they tell you it's illegal, it's harder to argue as you assume they've had more experience with it.

Add this to the fact that they're working for insurance companies (spits), and you have a healthy mix of ineptitude and greed.

When I was 33bhp restrictedI called up a few ins comps and when I tole them the bike would be restricted, I was told when insuring a bike the restriction made no difference to them aslong as in the event of a claim I could prove it was restricted. I was like oh ok.

I gave em a call, she went away for about 10 mins to enquire whether my insurance company would insure me to carry pillions (???) came back - and said they would (Apparently some insurance companies do really cheap insurances for those riders who dont want cover for pillions). I explained what the guy had said to me before and she couldn't explain why he'd said what he said...

She told me i'd be about 30 minutes to process the adjustment to my policy so i waited and gave em a call back after 30 mins...

+£70 to include pillion passengers and move my address to York area and remove the garage clause (as I dont have one anymore :-p). It worked out about £30 for the pillion cover (which is what you guys explained), and i think the rest is made up of the extra policy and possibly some administration charge.

All good... I was really dreading the cost of removing the garage cover from my policy. Total for my insurance £395... prolly would've been cheaper if i'd done it all in one go...

It might be that insurance brokers have loads of "tickboxes" and "questions" which might be relevent with higher levels of insurance. For example an all incompassing Comprehensive policy might cover passenger, and / or pillion for injury.
Obviously on third party fire and theft insurance, this isn't an issue but they might still ask it because there is a box to fill in, although it has nothing at all to do with the particular policy you are considering.

Depends on which area I should imagine. I keep my bike outside and pay £315 FC for an SV650 at 25, but the area I'm in is OK. If you were in, say, Tang Hall, I'm sure the premium would increase a little.

Where in York are you moving to?

City centre, Nunnery Lane, I'm not far from the Station... about 5 mins walk.

Went up yesterday to pick up the keys, absolutely fantastic place (not really been around it properly even though my gf's been goin to Uni there for the past year :-p). Loads of bikers everywhere, will have to see if there are any regular meets going on and if i can get involved...

More importantly, about 5 minutes walk from Heine Gerricke. I think the biggest local meet is at Squires at Sherburn in Elmet on Wednesday evenings, but Helmsley on a Sunday can get quite busy too, not really a proper meet as such though.

lol, My dad came up today and that was the first thing he said also... "ooooh, Hein Gerricke is just up the road..."

My dad's also taken me through Sherburn in Elmet (In the car), but I think we went past Squires... it was on the outskirts and was absolutely crammed with bikes, I've definately made plans to take a trip down just wasn't sure when... Will try and go and have a look this wednesday...

I buy most of my kit from the hein gericke on blossom street.

More people in york eh?

From Northallerton myself (well just near) but tend to go to squires fairly regular via york and take the road passed cawood (is it the B1222?)

Was at helmsley today, will have to show you a road that will make your CB500 seem much more interesting!

What, the Stokesley road? The road from Helmsley to York, via Sproxton is good as well, the B1257 or something like that. Am going to be at Helmsley tommorow early on (9ish) on the yellow SV650 if anyone is around.
