Right...

Basically... I'm looking for a GPS system to fit to my CG, being that I have the navigational skill of an iron filing in a magnet factory, can I get one to mount to the handlebars? Would it be protected from rain? What's the best unit to get?

Thanks Smile

Toby

Garmin Quest!!

Waterproof, bits are easily available, good warranty and backup.. PDA's are good but not suited to the vibration on a bike and NOT weatherproof.

Yep, garmin anything, with a RAM mounting bracket

Get the best you can afford, dont bother with anything mono, there ok but not nearly as good as colour.

Expandable memory is a very good thing.

Get a 12v adaptor off fleabay.

They are allot to pay out for but are 100% worth it, i miss mine:(

False economy though...... the screen WILL give up, i know lads in the XX club who have been gutted by it. First sign of moisture and you can kiss goodbye to the Medion PDA.. Its NOT designed for a bike but the GARMIN is.

Ive seen them branded as 3 others (one being evesham)

They are great in a car, but if it got rained on your stuffed.. + the vibes will bugger it in no time unless your carefull about mounting it...

Most garmin stuff will work in -15degrees temps and will work after being left under a metre of water for 30 minutes

Wouldn't use anything else Thumbs Up

Edit: Laughing beaten to it Razz just goes to show though, never heared of anyone rateign them badly, i used to sell them and people often came back saying how chuffed they were with them.

Haveing said that TOM TOM recently released a gps unit like the GO but specially for bikes, might be worth a look.

i wont bother getting the bar mounts for my bike now, it can just sit in my car and i can drive around and look like a sales rep.

cheers

Isn't the Tom Tom one touch screen though? That's going tobe fiddly when you've got gloves on.

I'll rattle on about the Garmin Quest (again!) as I can't fault mine yet.

Only problem is... Will the battery from a 2001 CG125 be enough to power one? Sad

Depends on how far you're going to ride it as to whether you need to power it.

I used mine to go to France and just used the battery. Lasted for six hours there and still had plenty left. Used it all the way back and at just over eight hours it went flat, but I was back in the UK on the M20 by that point and knew where I was going. Wink

I'd be very surprised if you're going for distances that far on your CG. Wink Laughing

I reckon that if I run it at half screen brightness I'd get over nine hours out of it. Just remember to take the mains charger if you do go on long distances. Its what I did.

Good gawd..

Yes the cg will power it more than adiquately..

They probably use less than 4watts (if that) and your headlights alone will be 55watt or so... If you were feeling really paranoid you can just leave the lights off while you use it.

You can use your normal batterys, they are just a pain to keep with you, is the garmin quest rechargeable? Its the only thing that put me off, if you can dump AA batterys in a gps then you won't ever have a problem powering it..

The tom toms software is far better than garmins (which is allrightwhen your used to it mind) the touch screen would be fine, you can't be very precice without gloves on so i reckon it would work great, certainly no worse than buttons...

Anyone use their mobile as a gps device?

I have a orange spv e200 and have been considering getting bluetooth gps device for it, they're £50 on ebay. Tomtom software is..how you say....easily obtainable. Wink

Just with the spv e200, the battery life is bad enough without having to use the bluetooth. Not sure how to wire up a charger to the battery to be perfectly honest.

699 quid! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Chrsit that's expensive. Quest costs 350 and the bike mount was only 30 quid extra.

Unit is rechargable, it doesn't take AA batteries or anything. But for a days rideout its more than enough.

Stillalmost double the price of a Garmin Quest that's waterproof and you can use it either on the bike or in a car or lorry.

Why are people banging on abou thte tom tom? is it cus its expencive people think its better?
Things to check;
Is it waterproof?
Does it give directions?
Can you power it on the bike?
Can you use it with gloves?
Does it make coffee?

What more does the tom tom do than the garmin or brand x?
