Hi guys,

I've been using my bike for about 1000 miles now, mainly for commuting though... And to be truthful, I'm starting to get peed off with it as I don't have the confidence to filter, or I'm always criticising the way I ride/making stupid mistakes etc... I'm starting to get really disheartened... I'm also crap with directions, which means I get lost all the time which makes me not want to go out on it for a ride because it's pretty boring just riding around the block...

At the moment it feels like I have a car rather than the bike I've wanted for almost 2 years... (No filtering etc) apart from I arrive at my destination, hot, sweaty, tired and pissed off... I think filtering would have something to do with it... And also the fact I've only really done commuter miles on it, and not something pleasurable.

Any help guys?

Thanks.

Toby

Show me a rider who doesn't make a mistake (whether it be a biggie or even a little 'un) whenever they go for a ride and I'll show you a fibber or a right boring bastard. It's good that you're critical of your riding, at least it shows that you're willing to learn by your mistakes and that you have an idea of how you might be able to improve your riding style.

Everything comes with practice and experience, it's as simple as that. Sooner or later you'll be in a queue of traffic and think 'Sod it, I'm feeling confident, I can make that gap' and you'll be filtering through the traffic and when you reach the front of the vehicles you'll wonder what the hell you've been worrying about (added to that you'll get the buzz of pissing passed a bucket load of cars Wink ).

Don't worry, take your time in gaining your confidence and don't be pressurised into trying something that you're not 100% sure about - As you get more experienced you'll find you have the ability to try different things and the magic will return Thumbs Up

Get ur arse out get lost and have fun!!! When I 1st started riding I used to intentionally get lost and stuff!!!! Best way to do it!!!!!! Remember all roads join eachother so how can u get lost?????? U can always find ur way back!!!! Get some of ur m8s into bikes and go out in gorups or see if there is any group riding around the area u can get involved in! Filtering is not neccessary I dont do it as much as I should I have had too many near misses but dont stop me have a bloody good time on a bike!!!! Dont pick at urself for mistakes learn from them if u have only done 1000 miles what do u expect! I have prob done couple of 100 x1000 miles on the road and I still make mistakes alpart of learning!!!! Just take it easy and have more fun runs!!!! Thumbs Up Smile Very Happy Wink

Shes right get it passed and get something bigger , a CG feels nippy and light (used it on the CBT) but doesn't quite have the lean angles , or the tear your arms out your sockets type feel under hard acceleration , or the top end.

When you see the road to your left a couple of feet from your face you think whoa and when you out accelerate some penis extension porsche boxer at the lights it feels great. Though the CG I reckon is a great filtering tool , though so is the Yam diversion 600 I saw yesterday due to its small width.

I've always enjoyed getting lost on the bike! Found some really good rides that way. In fact I often take roads i've never taken before just to see where they go, as long as I haven't got to be anywhere then it's fine.

Sounds like you need to relax a bit more and not beat yourself up over making mistakes, we all do it. Christ - I stalled pulling away from a set of traffic lights the other day with a panda car behind me!!

Just enjoy riding for the sake of riding Thumbs Up

Get a map, google map is good, and find yourself a good looking road to ride. Once you find the right one, one with plenty of bends you can see through for preference, and little traffic, you can ride it again and again, getting faster every time you ride it. Stringing together a decent set of corners with 'high' angles of lean and maintaining a high speed throughout can give a very big buzz.

Being able to see through the bends and being sure of the surface and that there isn't something stationary waiting just around the corner are fairly key to it. Smile You've just got to find the right road, and carrying a map (I'd recommend Tuffmap) with you on jaunts is fairly essential until you know the way for sure.

Commuting is always going to be boring as the point is that you normally want to be at work or at home, and what you're doing is necessary rather than because you want to.

One of my favourite things is filling up with fuel on the way to Matlock, and just setting off in the direction of Manchester, taking any road I like the look of on the way through. I know eventually I'll get to a road that points toward somewhere I know the way home from.

Thanks for the very helpful advice guys!

I'm looking to buy a GPS system at the moment so that should help!

Problem is, is that I've got lost before and ended up in some really dodgy areas... Which is never good :S

Work out where your going, www.theaa.co.uk <--- use thier "travel finder" thingy to find a route there. Print a copy, and head that way. I dont get lost, i just loose my bearings for a little while. Try going somewhere easy, main roads first off. Itll help when you come to take the smaller roads to get somewhere.

Secondly, just get out there, getting lost is fun, and if you do get somewhere you dont wanna be, just lock that rear wheel and spin it round 180degrees.

Just take some common sense and change for drinks / fuel and your sorted Thumbs Up

First time I tried to filter lost my nerve and waited on the hard shoulder for the traffic to clear.
So the next day I went out all day. Got to a road where the traffic was stopped pretty much dead, with a clear oncoming lane, so filtered down.
Gave me a massive confidence boost, now filter continuously.

Getting lost is all part of the fun of having a bike, no need to worry about getting stuck in traffic cos you went the wrong way.

It took a couple of months for me to get peeved with the cg, but depends where your rideing...

When you have been rideing a little longer you wont freak out as much, i know exactly the feeling when you get somewhere and be reaching for a change of pants and a towel, but it gets easyer, traffic will bother you less.. not much fazes me appart from REALLY bad traffic and shitty road signs (leicester, nottingham, birmingham, that means you)

Like mchaggis said, try and use country road instead of dual carrageways, you might be going slow but at least there more fun to be had Very Happy

One thing that i found amazeing fun was going on some (pretty mild) trials, it was an amazeing laugh! (halfway through putting a cg back together to do it again!) you need to be carefull of levers and mirrors being damaged... but might be worth a go one day?

I've only been riding since end of june (CBR125) and the best think I did was go on a long ride at weekend. I got 500 miles experence going to work and back (4 weeks) then went from B-ham to wales in a weekend. Clocked up another 600 miles by the time I got back I have so much more confidence in riding since then. I never had a problem filtering (bit wobberly the first couple of days) but just thought this is the advantages of having a bike so use it. My problem was I felt a bit cheeky especially coming to a stop at lights/islands and moving in front of the driver at the end of the queue. Then I got a driver in a Mini cooper at a dual carriagway that wasn't gonna let me infront after the lights so I hung back and let her infront and since then I filter to just behind the lead car (well some of the time) Takes the pressure off a bit as you dont have to floor it at the lights/island cos your not at the very front. Just need to be ultra observant when filtering and be careful of junctions (try to move back in when you spot one)

I'm only on a CG... so what do I do if I can't get back in lane at the end of the lights? Don't really fancy moving with the other cars when I'm in the middle! Done it once and realised it was an Audi TT next to me... Rolling Eyes Had to give it proper spuds to move out!

I've done it a couple of times before, I'm just not sure how I'm supposed to get back in lane Sad

To get back in do a lifesaver (this will indecate to the car behind of your intensions and move in and indicate if you feel the siduation would benifit one. When I pull upto the lights turn your wheel into the space between the two cars or put your leg there but try to antisipate the cars coming to a stop and move in before. If the gap isn't big enough then move infront of the lead car. Can't say its 100% correct road behaviour just what I do

I'm fairly lucky in that my 20 miles ride to work includes anything up to 10 miles of lanes. If the weathers a bit off then I just change the route, adds about 2 miles and is mainly 'a' roads. Just take a look at a map and see if you can find a different way to somewhere you know.
The other way is to find someone to ride with, they might be able to give advice or just company, not everyone rides at 90 everywhere Twisted Evil

Pretty much like Psychonaut when it comes to filtering, try to make yourself 'bigger' and don't feel guilty unless you hit something Smile . If you need to get back in lane then look for gaps, doesn't need to be bike sized, just enough to get your leg /wheel into. Indicate, lifesaver, and if someone does let you in it don't hurt to acknowledge them. Thumbs Up If you get real gits that won't let you in then just get as far over as you can.

Pass your test, get a bigger bike and Maurice and I will show you some nice roads in N Wales.

Maybe we would even meet you on the Wirral. Thumbs Up

That'll relieve the boredom. If you're communting on the same roads then it wil become boring. Thumbs Up

As someone said earlier have a few routes for work. Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the advice! It's pretty much a 20 mile straight line to my work, with some of the crappiest roads in history (Really bumpy, full of potholes and patches of tarmac!)

What I like most is town riding, although I haven't been on any twisties yet there's 4 great roundabouts on the way home from work that I really enjoy (If anyone knows it, it's from Estuary Business Park in Speke, L24 all the way to Aigburth, L17, past Brunswick and the Liver Buildings Smile)

I always get pissed off and sick of driving when I get lost.
It's veryu satisfying and fun when you don't though.

Answer is don't get lost.

I bet you get a route planned , look at it for a bit maybe stick it on your tank then get going. You really have to look at the route.

Hey Toby, i been browsing through this site for a while now, a fellow Cg rider lol.

As a L plate rider myself, i know full well what its like not to filter too much..and for a week or so i got bored of riding..

But whatever you do DONT STOP RIDING!!! lol seriously, even the Cg's can filter some, just not as fast as others...

I used to think the same, but after popping an accidental wheely, and after having a few accidents ive gained confidence...and now i filter occasionally...

so whatever you do, keep biking mate

All the best

Paul

sometimes my bike is not working so i cant ride it. and often im too lazy to get off the sofa, but once im on it and its working, its never boring, even if im just popping off down the shops.

I enjoy being able to cut through traffic by filtering and driving oh so slighlty above the speed limit so i go thru the next lights on green instead of being caught at them on red.

my house to bham by mbike=20mins, my house to bham by bus=1 hours if im lucky
